@brunoph They operated for 60 years. They were done and they were only producing rather small amount of Germany's electricity. Operating them any longer would have been dangerous or incredibly expensive. It's ok though because wind and solar are now cheaper than fossil fuels.

@TheSaanichDaily sure, but the same lobby prevented new plants from being built. More efficient plants. Safer plants. This is just the last nail in the coffin.

@brunoph Why would they spend 20 years building power plants that produce incredibly expensive electricity when renewables can be deployed almost immediately for less.

There's a very simple reason almost no one is building new nuclear, it's a bad economic bet.

@TheSaanichDaily That's very easy to say today, after the horse is well and truly dead. However these facts were as true in 1970 as they are today. And after 5 decades of whataboutism, Germany, and their world at large, is still pumping CO2 and other toxic material into the atmosphere, all under a banner of nuclear anxiety and a cartoon of a smiley sun.
