Congratulations Germany on giving the coal lobby exactly what it wanted: at least a few more decades worth of resilience on fossil fuels. Galaxy brain move here. https://www.dw.com/en/german-lawmakers-divided-as-last-nuclear-plants-close/a-65332978?
German lawmakers divided as last nuclear plants close

The remaining three nuclear power stations went offline on Saturday. Some politicians have welcomed the shutdown while others warned that the intermittent nature of renewable energy will require more fossil fuels.

Deutsche Welle
The greens were so obsessed with their irrational fear of nuclear energy that they just ate from the fossil fuel lobby’s plate, instead of focusing on ending the dependency on fossil fuels *first*. Their inability to understand nuance and to think in broad terms made sure that the number one CO2 polluter in Western Europe will remain in this position for the foreseeable future. /rant

@brunoph They operated for 60 years. They were done and they were only producing rather small amount of Germany's electricity. Operating them any longer would have been dangerous or incredibly expensive. It's ok though because wind and solar are now cheaper than fossil fuels.

Gas can’t compete with wind, solar and storage, even in world’s biggest market

Latest cost assessment from Lazard shows that wind, solar and storage win against gas in every metric – including firming – in world’s biggest market.

@TheSaanichDaily sure, but the same lobby prevented new plants from being built. More efficient plants. Safer plants. This is just the last nail in the coffin.

@brunoph Why would they spend 20 years building power plants that produce incredibly expensive electricity when renewables can be deployed almost immediately for less.

There's a very simple reason almost no one is building new nuclear, it's a bad economic bet.

@TheSaanichDaily That's very easy to say today, after the horse is well and truly dead. However these facts were as true in 1970 as they are today. And after 5 decades of whataboutism, Germany, and their world at large, is still pumping CO2 and other toxic material into the atmosphere, all under a banner of nuclear anxiety and a cartoon of a smiley sun.
