A sign the Russians don't really understand US politics that they kidnapped a WSJ reporter. WSJ (both news and opinion) is an opinion leader for GOP elites and is now publishing anti-Putin stuff on the front page every day.

If they had kidnapped a WaPo or NYT reporter instead, WSJ would be running op-eds about how manly strong Putin was justly punishing them for their wokism or whatever.

@mtsw I’m curious if the breakdown between pro-Russia / pro-Ukraine / don’t care caucuses among GOP politicians and voters. Seen anything?
@TobyHardtospell havent seen a systemic analysis but the split seems to be between traditional "national security" conservatives (anti-russia) and Trumpist MAGA fascists (pro Putin)
@mtsw And WaPo or NYT would be running similar op-eds. "Is Our Imprisoned Reporter a Spy? Let's Not Dismiss the Idea Too Quickly," by Bret Stephens
@mtsw it's like someone kidnapping Rupert Murdoch for ransom when we'd literally pay them to keep him
