"Thank you for selecting my image and making this a historic moment, as it is the first AI generated image to win in a prestigious international PHOTOGRAPHY competition" https://www.eldagsen.com/sony-world-photography-awards-2023/ An image (allegedly) generated by a ML model wins the Sony World Photo Awards, then the person who submitted it (Boris Eldagsen) refuses the prize, and asks for "a discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not".

@jgbarah are you sure this is true? surely those very weird hands would have instantly given it away as AI?
@simonblackbourn
No, I'm not sure. But have a look at the post, that is (IMHO) not the main point

I've checked around a bit. Curiously enough, I couldn't find the story in most media, even when news about Sony Awards are many. But there are some detailed followup, such as https://petapixel.com/2023/04/14/artist-refuses-prize-after-his-ai-image-wins-at-top-photo-contest/ I would say the story is legit...

Interesting: the photo appeared as a featured entry to the contest in a blog post by Anna Bonita Evans, apparently posted on December, as shown in the Internet Archive, captured in January https://web.archive.org/web/20230129170158/https://www.worldphoto.org/blogs/14-12-22/pick-pics
But it doesn't appear in the current version of that same post https://www.worldphoto.org/blogs/14-12-22/pick-pics
