I feel like it's worth reminding people that Citizens United, during which Justice Thomas, we have learned, was very obviously on the take, was a 5-4 vote.
@mhoye The real smoking gun was the Bob McDonnell case. We convicted our Governor of bribery, but Thomas & Co. threw out the law. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/06/27/483711311/supreme-court-throws-out-former-virginia-governor-bob-mcdonnells-conviction
@Virginicus that was a unanimous verdict, though, not one where Thomas was a deciding vote.
@mhoye True; there is no disagreement on the Court about whether rich people should be able to lavish public officials with luxuries.
@mhoye @Virginicus That actually raises questions about the integrity of the entire Supreme Court, and about whether they are ALL interpreting the law to legalize “gifts” to themselves and to their favored politicians from rich patrons from across the ideological spectrum. I don’t know if that’s a fact, but it’s a worrisome possibility.
