I am continually disappointed (but not surprised) by the people who decide to run platforms for user-generated content who have not bothered to study the last fifteen years of academic, industry, and policy work on content moderation and free speech.

Substack CEO Chris Best Doesn’t Realize He’s Just Become The Nazi Bar

I get it. I totally get it. Every tech dude comes along and has this thought: “hey, we’ll be the free speech social media site. We won’t do any moderation beyond what’s required.” Even Twitter init…

@evacide Or just like… the last year on Twitter, the platform he is specifically trying to sherlock.
@evacide I’d be disappointed if I hadn’t buried my expectations a long time ago

@evacide And how.

Thought experiment for VCs. Would you fund a smart 30yo who wanted to compete with Intel or ARM on CPUs? Without said founder doing some serious analysis on the market and pitfalls?

How is Substack different?

(Just in case there are reply guys here, I know about RISC V & associated startups)

@evacide And some of us worked Trust and Safety way before that back when it was called Abuse Desk.
@jtomasello You are as OG as it gets in this area.

@evacide Chris knows better because he co-founded and was the CTO of Kik which had its share of Trust and Safety issues.

#hugops for customer success or trust and safety people at Substack

Hey Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run The Content Moderation Learning Curve

@evacide just listened to his interview with Nilay Patel and man he doesn’t have a plan at all
@evacide a friend suggested I could spin up a side business automating the hosting of Mastodon instances. (she's right, I could).. she was a little surprised when I all but ran screaming from the idea; I don't want to platform fascists even for a second, and I don't want to be responsible for NOT doing so.
@evacide Those whose mission is to disrupt the institutions of the world are obviously going to be way too busy and important to feck around with the tedious business of learning how anything actually works.
