Now in the room for “Journalism in the Era of Business Model Evolution: Imagining the End State” at #isoj2023
“We lost control of the business model...in journalism.” Jon Kelly (Puck) But...a lot of the business models that Kelly mentions (favorably) like Uber, Spotify, etc. have yet to find a path to profitability (and have destroyed critical infrastructure in the process). So I’m not buying this.
Kelly now talking about the music industry entering an “end state” (the implication being that this is the ideal state) without mentioning the tremendous transfer of capital away from individual artists towards a handful of tech companies. If this is the business model that journalism should be emulating, journalists should be very concerned.
@5easypieces 💯 💯 💯 It's been gratifying to see silicon valley stumble while trying to capture the movie business
@stevefelix For sure. I’m all for exploring new business models, but do it by honestly examining the implications of the models you’re referring to. To just say that Spotify upended the music industry in solely positive ways without examining the impact on artists, or that Uber changed transportation without looking at how it has destroyed a lot of transportation infrastructure is just dishonest.
