Hot Take: Other news organizations should strongly consider whether NPR's exit from #birdsite and the behavior leading up to it means that the only public spirited, journalistic response is to suspend operations as well. https://www.npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label #Solidarity #Journalism
@dwl Would be nice, but “the liberal media” copies FOX, not NPR.
@MisterStars72 I strongly suspect the staff of most national news organizations (and others) will be talking about this today around-the-watercooler.
@dwl They should have made that decision at a dozen points before today. I have great admiration for NPR, but their exit is not a sign that others should be exiting as well, but rather evidence that even the most ethical news organizations (and ones not driven by profit) will only leave Twitter when the deliberate bigotry and content manipulation affect their organization directly.
@richard_merren You may well be right. But sometimes the drip-drip-drip adds up. This feels to me like a moment where news organizations need to do some real introspection.
@dwl I wonder what reasonable news organizations will turn towards as a replacement. Most of what I used Twitter for is news and deep weather content. Some weather folks have started posting more on Mastodon due to Musk's erratic moves, but the National Weather Service is still getting reposted by bots. No Fediverse presence. I'd love for a non-big tech alternative to gain traction. What will it take?
@celeste_kallio @dwl
Our executive branch needs to stop posting content on that Nazi's foul site imo.
I think all journos should fall on their swords in protest
@dwl Like others have done, they can set up Mastodon servers under their domain names so they are self-verified and can reach their audience without interference of a bad actor controlling a social media platform.
@dwl Real Take: NPR earned the label. Twitter has lots of issues but labeling state funded news propaganda is not one of them; nor is NPR going silent a loss.

@dwl @Gargron good question! I believe that serious journalists should consider this question as well. Regardless of their organization’s stance because #EMuskovy is very likely to fully weaponize that platform during next year’s election cycle. Now is the time to get setup in the #Fediverse so as not to be part of that “s..t show”.
