Well the Royal Ontario Museum was a disappointment. Looks like a fancy pants and modern museum on the outside, but mostly an expensive way to look at out of context artefacts in glass cases and taxidermy. #ROM #Toronto #Canada
And the explainer they had showing whale bones to kids was terrible. Ignored the waiting young people to swap phone numbers and talk about their next tattoo with other adults and when they did talk about the bones their knowledge of evolution was sketchy to nonexistent. #RoyalOntarioMusem #ROM #Toronto
The building is very cool though... #RoyalOntarioMuseum #ROM #Toronto
@Paul_Hill Kinda screwed when the spaceship is required though…
@Paul_Hill That’s shockingly bad. If they get paid for it, it’s even worse.
@hischeekiness they definitely had better things to do and knowledge in other areas...
@Paul_Hill That’s my experience too, and I live in Toronto. I let my membership lapse because of the same reasons you mention. That, and I find it’s too big. The Art Gallery of Ontario is more my size, and usually has interesting art exhibits. Not always, but usually. And it’s more about art than education (ROM is the opposite). Toronto lacks a museum for local art, culture and history (one that’s similarly-sized to the AGO). There’s a movement to convert the old city hall to be that.
@sillygwailo I was surprised at the lack of local context and connection. I get that it has an international aspect but why isn't it linked to the communities that are clearly very important to the Toronto/Ontario story? In fact it was the lack of story telling that was most disappointing, especially in the First Nations gallery which came across as very 'colonial'.

@Paul_Hill I’m hopeful Toronto will have something like the Museum of Vancouver (which I love but I think could be bigger). https://museumofvancouver.ca/feature-exhibitions

We do have the “Myseum of Toronto” (not a typo, eye-roll) which doesn’t have a feel of permanence to it (no building that’s dedicated just to it, for one, plus it could be ten times bigger, minimum). https://www.myseumoftoronto.com/

@sillygwailo missed it, so much to do in the city. Next time I'm in Toronto! Hopefully not too long as it is a city I very much love.
@Paul_Hill That’s what I love about Toronto: There’s quite a lot to do here. It’s like how I feel about Boston: Every time I’ve gone, I do stuff on my list and find that the list grows after that. I always have a reason to go back!
@sillygwailo Boston is great. I have the same with Berlin, a different visit every time.
