are they gay or just alternative
case in point: yesterday some mostly shaved head tattooed trenchcoat large bat swooping around the station openly giving me the eye, and I was just like, you could be cool and queer. or. you could be a fascist
alternative looks tend to correlate with radical viewpoints but unless the person has like a very obvious trans pin or something there is no way to know from a distance exactly which type of radical that is
do they appear to be glaring because they think I’m appropriating their culture, or because on account of being goth they just look like that
god forbid I accidentally make eye contact with a fascist trying to work out what their tattoos are

this gets even more complicated when you take into account that because the aesthetic is “scary” that also translates to conventions of superficial friendly/flirting behaviour

a long, unsmiling, insolent stare that may imply a desire to rip you out of your clothing does not specify whether that’s because they want to bang or because they think you shouldn’t have been wearing it

anyway coincidentally I filmed a video related to all of this that should be up next week 🦇
PLOT TWIST: at a queer event and nearly 100% certain train station goth is in the club
didn’t think I’d ever find out the political identity of this exact specific goth but it’s fun that I have. unless they’re undercover of course
@shonalika what an accident! and heck yes I'm looking forward to watching that!
@shonalika I’m very much looking forward to that.
@shonalika this description of stare does not look friendly at all but people are different…
@shonalika This is very true. I have a bald white head and wear my beard in 2 braids, and I wear mostly coveralls in the winter, a look I find comfortable and sort of cuddly. But the other day this man scopes me out several times, and then he comes right up and growls, “Are you a skinhead?” (meaning clearly the neonazi kind) and I’m like OH NO THE OPPOSITE OF THAT. But the guy had no way of knowing just from looking at me
@shonalika 'gay or fash' is such a sucky game. I'm more glad when it's "straight but gender playful goth or queer" but oy.
@shonalika Interesting how my brain actually mosty associate facism and fascists with suits these days
@maloki I mean yeah that tracks!! but like you see the super militaristic punk inspired goth thing sometimes and it’s like. ah. this is one of two extremes and I most definitely do not want to risk getting it wrong and accidentally smiling at a fascist
@maloki this is why goths don’t smile at each other. it’s in case the others are fascists

@shonalika 🤣

That's so silly. but too true :P

@shonalika @maloki oof, yeah. Just last week i was thinking "oh, must be a fellow comrade from the black bloc! Oh, oh no, wrong flag, wrong flag-"
