This is exactly why I have struggled to adapt my hashtagging practices to really work on Mastodon. “On top of all that, in-post hashtags feel thirsty. After a decade of Twitter and Instagram, I associate them firmly with spammers and #blessed clout-chasing thinkfluencers, #shoehorning that #pound #symbol into the #middle of #sentences to reach more #eyeballs.” https://www.theverge.com/23673125/mastodon-separate-tags-hashtag-navigation-accessibility
Hashtags are everything on Mastodon — why not give them a home?

Mastodon is a helpful alternative to Twitter, but its reliance on in-post hashtags is inconvenient compared to blogging platforms like Tumblr.

@overholt yuuuuup. I think adopting Tumblr's approach to hashtags like the author suggests is the way to go.
@overholt @JoeGermuska I still think that some kind of federated search - with each instance indexing their own content - would work if it was made part of the protocol

@realtbecker @overholt the threads I've read debating adding search to Mastodon makes that seem like a big "if"!

I'm also curious about the mechanics, and especially the scaling properties of federated search.

That doesn't mean I think Mastodon search is impossible, either technically or socially—but not simple either!

@realtbecker I like that search (and other things) are explicitly accounted for ("big-world networking) in the AT protocol underlying BlueSky

@overholt yes, yes, yes this is desperately needed.
@overholt
Trying to parse a post that is studded with hashtags & emojis is so annoying that I just keep scrolling. So I am disciplining myself to put my hashtags after whatever I am trying to say. Much like the placement of subject headings in a bib record.
