@jblue Never thought about trilliums in a planter! 🤯 Do you leave the pot out all year?
@docdieterlen yes. I’m trying to propagate them so my whole yard is a native plant paradise. I keep these in the planter and put a cage on top so the squirrels can’t dig in it and destroy the plants.
@jblue interesting! How cold are your winters, aka does the soil in the pot freeze solid?
@docdieterlen we had one night in the polar vortex that dropped down to 19F but otherwise it’s rather mild. 50’s in the day (sometimes 60’s and 70’s) upper 40’s at night, except for the occasional vortex. My pink lemon only came inside for about a week’s length. Feijoas were protected for that one night with sheets and trash bags. White and black sapote, kuai muk, pitangatuba and achacha were out most of the winter.
@jblue so, not a cold winter at all by my standards. Guess these trilliums have a big range, since I have definitely lived at the other end of it (Connecticut/New York/Michigan), all USDA zone 5 or 6. Are you propagating by seed or cutting or what?
@docdieterlen seeds. I want to make sure everything flowers every year so I can keep planting and spreading. 😊
@jblue are the seeds difficult to start? Sorry to pepper you with questions- I've never considered growing my own trilliums, but it's appealing!
@docdieterlen I grew these from roots I got off of Etsy. Supposedly the seeds only germinate in second year. I plan to just sow them outside and let nature take its course. The area where it will be is well composted.
@jblue those seeds would be great candidates for wintersowing in the climate I have here.
@docdieterlen I’d recommend trying both seeds and root cuttings if you want to start your own beds. Did we talk before about acorns?
