It is time for the #BBC and #NPR to set up shop on #Mastodon. Same applies to all other serious news institutions.

They should set up their own servers. They have the means to do so and it just makes sense.

#Twitter

@jon I worked for a national newspaper for ten years in technology, and while I think it’s a great idea, I don’t think it’ll happen. Just not enough vision in the tech space and with the problems with advertising/support there’s little appetite for creative thinking. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong, but that’s what my time there tells me.

@Gizmo , I think this is different. For me the #fediverse and #Mastodon is more like the Web. Not everyone has realized that as yet, but that will change.

Elon Musk is in many ways helping point out why we really need this change, if it was not clear to people before.

@jon That could be true. All I know is when I wanted to buy a server to host BigNationalNewspaper.com, I had to submit a budget for approximately two servers in order to be sure that the capital for one would be approved (if I’d’ve asked for one, I probably would’ve gotten the money for half) and budgeting over there has only gotten worse I’m told. I could be completely wrong, it’s just my sense.

And as a disclaimer the organization I worked for wasn’t one you mentioned.
