Genuine question. When and why did people start making white websites? I've just installed dark themes for various sites like youtube and they are not only much easier on the eyes but look a lot better too! It's odd how so many successful websites don't realise that their site is actually an ugly eye sore.

@Zeratul I would say "because dark is judged too… well dark".

Also, dark text on light background looks more like text on paper, I guess.

I do agree with, in general I prefer dark theme. But I also think that there are ways to make a light theme easy on the eyes, and a dark theme hard, but it takes work. In fact, it takes work to make any design great and good looking.

@arcans Hmm. Perhaps a light background that's closer to grey would be better than straight up white. I think I'll put together a simple wepbage today and try some experiments to see what combinations of background and text colour is both attractive and easy on the eyes.
@Zeratul I think you can try to work with any off-white to make it easier on the eyes, then build around that variations.
