As I start with Mastodon, there's a weird feeling to be in a social network with almost no follower. It's like Twitter is a bar where many people know me, and entering a new bar where nobody sees me. It will take some time to build a social graph here.

Also what matters most is not the number of followers, but rather the quality of the interactions and of the discourse. My goal is that if Twitter shuts down (slowly or suddenly), I'll have a second online home and won't feel "homeless online".

@sam a few tips:
- inspect interesting people's followee list to find more interesting people
- follow hashtags for more interesting content, and add some to your posts to extend their reach
- make sure to select the correct language for your post: some clients allow setting language filters
- not all replies to a post may be federated to your instance. Open the post on its origin instance to see them all.
@sam welcome 😉
@cnotin Thank you Clément! You've been hanging around here for some time already? What motivated you to make the effort?
@sam yes I’ve created my account at the end of 2022 when the other guy took over the birdsite. I was worried it could explode any time…
I have mixed feelings because it’s good here too but I actually lack the algorithm, since I mostly see toots from very active accounts while I’m sure I’m missing gems from other accounts…
@cnotin I see what you mean. Maybe in some ways these two social networks complement each other, but it takes time to be on 2 sites instead of one…
@sam I am a big fan of your instance name « tutut delire party ».
@cl3mcg Then I think you can congratulate my friend @bnjbvr_en who invited me to his instance. I wouldn't have had the motivation to create a Mastodon account. He did everything for me, and I just had to enter a password :).
@sam @bnjbvr_en Samuel, seriously, do you consider that creating a Mastodon account is an annoying/complicated process ?
It’s a genuine question, because I am always very surprised to hear this, as I don’t really understand what is actually annoying/complicated.
So, was this a perception from you, or do you still consider that it is a annoying/complicated thing. ✌️

@cl3mcg @bnjbvr_en Actually, I don't know, since they created an account for me 5 years ago, so I never had to try myself. It's the general perception I see from people on Twitter who complain about how they feel they need to be tech-savvy to onboard on Mastodon. Or make unusual decisions like choosing an instance.

But true or not, I think this perception is pushing many people away from actually trying. I wonder what could be done to improve this perception.

@sam you will also meet friends who no longer go to the older bar because the owner is awfull.
@gmonserand Yes I’ve already started missing some of them.
