So Elon Musk, apparently throwing a fit after Substack announced a Twitter-like "Notes" product earlier this week, has now not only blocked tweets from being embedded in Substack posts but has blocked Substack articles from being shared on Twitter. It's preposterous but also reflective of his broader philosophy for ruini-- I mean running the company, which is hostage-taking and destruction instead of trying to grow the platform by, you know, improving it.
My video tweets alone have done more than 4 billion views over the years. I don't expect Twitter to throw a parade for me, but it would be nice if they would at least just leave progressive creators and journalists alone. Instead, every week seems to bring new opportunities to shit on us and make it increasingly difficult to use the platform to promote our content. It's ridiculous, and I'm going to take today off from providing free content for Elon.
I am going to try to use this latest annoyance as an opportunity to grow my presence on other platforms, including here on Mastodon. And if you've enjoyed my coverage over the years on Twitter, at Vox, or since I've gone independent, I humbly ask you to subscribe to my newsletter, Public Notice. @atrupar

Already signed up, Aaron. I highly recommend it.

Very timely articles, well supported, excellent point of view, and well put together.

Glad to hear you're maintaining your presence here in Mastodon.

@atrupar Glad to have you posting here again, we don't bite!

@atrupar as long as #journalists continue to have unique content, threads and discussions at Twitter alone, Mastodon, and other outlets, will grow slowly.

I understand why journalists continue with a presence at Twitter but it *must* be repeated elsewhere. I will no longer give my own original content or reply to journalists at the bird site any more. #TwitterMigration

@barbarakb @atrupar

I'll tell you why they still use Twitter. Their corporate masters tell them in order to please their advertisers

@lednabm @barbarakb @atrupar that’s not quite how journalism works. many sites are non-profit or not-for-profit. I’ve seen quite a few pull back on their presence (just a news feed of links).
@barbarakb @atrupar Great point...
@lednabm @atrupar keep Twitter as a newsfeed but make Mastodon a place for threads and conversations. let’s have civil engagement here.

@barbarakb @atrupar

It would be nice for that to be the case; however, in practice, it's not going to work that way. There are way too many absolutists on both sides of the circular spectrum. You know, where one end meets the other.

@lednabm @atrupar of course there will be disagreements. had them for over 30 years online. but the anonymous venom on Twitter, encouraged by Elon, isn’t found here as much. I’ve had delightful civil discussions here. :)

@barbarakb @lednabm @atrupar

Same here. Mastodon is for conversations. And I believe it can, and should, be an integral part of independent journalism’s social reach in 2023.

@KimberlyN @barbarakb @lednabm @atrupar I remember the early Twitter days. Journalists ignored us then. :)

@atrupar
I’m already a subscriber and enjoy it very much.

I’m so glad you’re going to grow your presence here!

@atrupar

You might want to put your mastodon handle on your "about" page. Also, I could not find any information about pricing. I am guessing this will show after you enter your email but I suspect many (I do) will find this off-putting.

@atrupar

Awsome! You are more than welcome here! 😎

@atrupar I'm already a subscriber; just wanted to say thanks for your work and encourage your continued contribution to Mastadon!
@atrupar Unless journalists start investing genuine effort in other platforms **and** put distance between yourselves and Twitter — as you’ve mentioned in this thread — Elon will continue to impugn you, and Twitter will continue to command engagement for its network effects. The only way to beat it is starvation. When journalists remain at Twitter, there’s no incentive to look elsewhere. And, yes, I know that’s easier said than done with livelihoods on the line.
@atrupar Already receiving your newsletter! Glad to see you become more active in the #Fediverse, we need voices like yours here.
@atrupar Yet another childish reaction from Musk 😳
@atrupar already a subscriber. Hopefully you will post and interact more here. I miss seeing how your kids are doing. 😀
@atrupar You should change that to Mastodon ... (or at least add your Mastodon username )
@atrupar so much for free speech absolutism
@atrupar saw this and followed. we "book people" welcome you ;))
@atrupar Glad to see you posting here! Bring more reporters with you here from twitter - leave that megalomaniac creep running twitter alone with the people foolish enough to pay money to help bail him out finance-wise and ego-wise.
@atrupar your newsletter confirmation page promotes your Twitter account but doesn't have anything about your Mastodon account. Maybe you can change that?
@atrupar should have done this from day one. Better late than never I guess 😑
@atrupar already done. Just followed you over from Twitter. That place...jfc.
@atrupar I'm glad for it. Your twitter feed is one of a few that I continue to return to twitter to read.
