General Motors hates your iPhone

As first reported by Reuters, General Motors has decided that the company’s future electric cars will drop support for CarPlay and Android Auto, preferring the company’s own infotainmen…

Six Colors
@sixcolors I'm taking GM off the list of choices for my next car.

@sixcolors I have a lot of strong feelings about this, because it’s a clear case of a corporation prioritizing its own business and technical interests over the needs of its users.

Apple does the same thing all the time lol.

@sixcolors I have a 2014 Ford Focus that came with Sync 2/My Ford Touch by Microsoft. They sent updates on usb sticks for a few years, but I got a letter a couple years back stating that Ford is ending support. Now I have an infotainment system that blue screens, refuses to connect to Bluetooth devices, and has a GPS nav that no longer works. To make matters worse it’s a non-standard size and is integrated with the dash display so I can’t even replace it with aftermarket hardware.

@sixcolors @joesteel I used to work with GM on their in-car stuff, and they are 100% sure that GM knows how to do UI much better than Apple or Android.

They are also 100% wrong.

@sixcolors This is a dealbreaker for me. No CarPlay, no purchase.
@sixcolors The hero image from this story made me realize you can change which side the CarPlay sidebar is on, which I did not know before!
@duncankbmusic @sixcolors can you though? I think it depends on which side of the car the steering wheel is on. Which I imagine the car tells the phone when they connect
@scottearle @sixcolors That might be true for some cars! In my case, I installed an aftermarket CarPlay unit in my vehicle, and I just discovered you can manually change the driving position to the left or right on the unit.
@duncankbmusic @sixcolors Oh, for a third-party unit that makes a lot of sense! On my (steering-wheel-on-the-right) Ford Everest, there is no setting in the software, although I’ve never removed the head unit to see if there might be a switch
@kevinrj @sixcolors After reading this article, I now understand why many people choose to repair their cars from the 1960s and 1980s rather than buying a new computer-controlled vehicle.
@sixcolors It is possible that GM is betting that Apple will have its own electric vehicle[s]. Not that harvesting data isn't in their plans...just might be another rung on their logic ladder.
