Architecture presentations today. A stressful day for some students… I don’t mark students down for not presenting well. But students who present well I mark up. I wonder if that’s fair? #ActuallyAutistic #PublicSpeaking #AcadmicChatter #Introverts
@SeaFury I think it is fair, especially from a neurodivergent viewpoint!
@SeaFury i wish I had neurodivergent teachers back in the day! You’re doing the good work 💕
@looneybyron There’s also a language aspect. Some of our students are international and English is their second language. I am very conscious of that!
@SeaFury that is very good of you!
@SeaFury
I do not miss those days. Even if you had a great professor, guest critics were a crapshoot. I had one critic state that I was only successful as an architecture student because of my beauty. I talk even more when anxious and would be accused of “talkitecture” even though I had produced as much work as my colleagues. But the clothing part was actually the hardest for me, anything “appropriate” felt painful to wear.
@SeaFury
Also I am no great beauty which just kind of blended the sexism with an insult to my work and my self.
@Minnesotan I hope I can be a force for change in architectural crits, as an undergrad, I had no power. Now as an academic, I can point out appropriateness of comments and steer conversations away from murky waters.
@Minnesotan I have also experienced brutal crits :(
@SeaFury
I love that you are creating change and not passing on the trauma you received. 💜
