@mmasnick my desk neighbor, looking at his phone, says "4.6, centered near Hollister"

@mmasnick

@mmasnick Didn't feel it in Concord FYI.

Central California - 4.6 EARTHQUAKE - Salinas, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Modesto, Fremont, Hayward, Stockton, Fresno, Antioch, Oakland, Daly City, Concord, Berkeley, San Francisco, and Richmond - 2023-04-04 22:23:18 UTC

@mchris to be fair, there are currently 9 people at my house and I was the only one who felt it...
@mmasnick @mchris I used to live out there: people in Concord are all past feeling, aren't they?
@mmasnick Right on top of one in Panama too.
@mmasnick I definitely felt that one in Palo Alto.
@mmasnick hope everyone is okay. It would be nice to have an earthquake bot on here.
@AustinB there are a bunch! @lastquake @CaliforniaQuakeBot @quakebot etc etc.
@mmasnick @lastquake @CaliforniaQuakeBot @quakebot I’ve only ever been through one earthquake, in New York, in 2011. As far as I know. But it’s interesting to see how often they happen.
@mmasnick Didn't feel it in Vallejo…
@mmasnick Mastodon folks in California can follow @CaliforniaQuakeBot for real time reporting. 4.6 near Hollister, 50 miles or so south of San Jose.
@mmasnick I was waiting for one of these!! :D
@mmasnick
A bit stronger than mismatched tennis shoes in the dryer over here in Oakland
@ryansingel we're having some work done (replacing water heater) so I thought maybe it was the workers, but then realized that wouldn't make the house shake like that...
@mmasnick
Workers dropping the empty water heater strong
@mmasnick might be nice if you could receive weather or other natural disaster warnings through mastodon
@LibrationPointThree there are a bunch of bots for that here.
@mmasnick Didn't feel it up here on the way north coast. How big did it feel?
@samhainnight it was a rolling kinda feel. Not too strong, but I definitely noticed it... while wife/kids did not.
@mmasnick isn’t CA well overdue on an earthquake anyway?

@mmasnick

@caeq showed it in my feed as 3 earthquakes

@mmasnick A 4.5 south of San Jose (Salinas). https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73866925/region-info

I grew up in that area. A 4.5? Did anyone even notice it? That's strong enough that, by the time you realize what it is, it's over.

Magnitude is an exponential scale. 4.6 is noticeably larger than 4.5. Don't get excited until it hits a 4.8 or higher. (Those are big. Says a guy who was at the epicenter of the big 6.9 in 1989.)

@hackerfactor @mmasnick Used to eat at the Tres Pinos cafe when I worked at Almaden Vineyards. They had a geological station at the Cienega winery to measure San Andreas fault movement.
@hackerfactor yeah. you could feel it, but it wasn't a scary one. I've been through scarier. And no one else in my house felt it.
@mmasnick
huh. I never feel anything less than a 5. my streak continues.

Attached: 1 image Looks like a preliminary 4.5 centered near Salinas.

@mmasnick

Didn't notice it in Berkeley. You on the peninsula?

@mmasnick there are plenty of quake accounts here on Mastodon. (I felt it too and checked here immediately.)
@mmasnick Thank you for getting this going! Didn't feel it...but I'll know in future to check in here.

@mmasnick Only a 4.6? I’ve had better sex.

Actually was in Tokyo in 2011. Now THAT was an earthquake. As a Contra Costa resident, none of us felt it.

@mmasnick house was wobbling plenty here in South County Monterey.
@mmasnick i really want to figure out how to get public agencies to migrate so I can get my BART updates and storm coverage here. I know they're posting automatically anyhow.
