Experts: Indictment May Signify Donald Trump Has Been Accused Of Crime
Is Donald Trump Guilty? It May Be Up To A Jury, Experts Say
@Popehat
? Isn't it ALWAYS (in the US, at least) "up to a jury"?
@SonofaGeorge @Popehat yeah that's the joke (unless charges get dismissed first)

@gcampax @SonofaGeorge @Popehat The Manhattan DA is messing with the guy who hired a ghost writer to create "The Art of the (Plea) Deal".

I'm expecting Trump to cop to some fines, no jail time, and barring him from doing business in NY state.

Trump will cop not because the case in NY is so strong, but because he will need it to go away so he can focus on the upcoming case in Georgia and the federal documents shenanigans.

@SonofaGeorge Not exactly. The right to trial-by-jury is a waivable right, and one may choose to waive it for a variety of reasons.

(... but I think our dear Popehat is mostly taking the piss out of the idea that any pundits have anything useful to say right now about the Trump affair, since nothing interesting or unusual has happened yet).

@mtomczak @SonofaGeorge Yeah, and the same pundits saying nothing useful about TFG for days on end are ignoring things like TX removing the elected members of a local school board, TN expelling legislators who expressed solidarity with protestors in Nashville, or FL arresting peaceful protestors in Tallahassee.
@Agent17 @mtomczak There is a very frightening and "hiding in plain sight" move in the US to fascism. Always remember: Hitler was democratically elected in the first instance.

@SonofaGeorge @Popehat

Not if the charges are dismissed first on legal grounds

@SonofaGeorge you have correctly parsed the joke, yes
@SonofaGeorge @Popehat Republicans are issued a stay-out-of-jail card good for 50 indictments when they take office. After that they can pay to stay out using any major credit card.

@Popehat The experts will probably be the only ones saying that, though. The rest of the world made up their minds -one way or the other- a long, long time ago.

Also: he’s totally guilty 😜

@Popehat yes, his bullshit is everywhere.
@Popehat "who elected this jury of halfwits", man on the street is quoted as saying

@Popehat

Experts are not very confident but are correct.

@Popehat why does he get a regular jury, when the grand jury already voted, huh?

(Precautionary /s)

@Popehat The prosecution is only going after him because he’s Donald Trump and that just so happens to be the name on all the checks and falsified records. Disgraceful.
@Popehat This right here is why I follow you 😂

@Popehat

I spent the entirety of Herr Drumpf’s debacle cursing Jack Ruby. we sure could have used Lee Harvey Oswald.

@Popehat Now as an expert I’d love to hear your thoughts on the possibility of the Law and Order defense where the jury finds not guilty BUT THEN an attractive detective runs in with the New Evidence.
@Popehat. Huh? Of course it is up to the jury. The chances that he will plead guilty are zero. He doesn't understand what a law is as a concept that can or should constrain his behavior. Even if the jury finds him guilty on the basis of overwhelming evidence, he will insist that he is not guilty.
@wbtphdjd William.
@Popehat. Then I saw your subsequent posts and realized you were perpetrating a whole thread of sarcasm.

@Popehat @wbtphdjd

Seems we need a new mastodon instance:

mastodon.sarcasm

@video_manager @the_Effekt @Popehat @wbtphdjd I would probably end up being banished to sarcasm.island if we had such a thing.

@Popehat

I'm no expert, but I think he can be as guilty as hell, yet be acquitted by a jury.

(Note from peanut gallery: acquitted doesn't mean innocent.)

@Popehat I feel bad for the experts who get roped into filling time on air for journalists who don't actually have any interesting questions to ask, but feel obligated to focus on the Big Breaking Story for hours.

And if they do ask a good question, the right answer is almost always, "I'd need to look that up and you gave me no prep for this appearance."

@Popehat Guilt being up to a jury is UnAmerican. *sage nod*

@Popehat No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with people making their own judgements and saying he's guilty. It shouldn't, and won't, have any effect on the legal system, but it's fine for people to say he's guilty.

There was never this much hand wringing when the LAPD framed OJ Simpson. People felt perfectly free to discuss their opinions on his guilt.

@Popehat crazy, and he gets to have the jury made of his peers.
