It’s kind of astounding how many trees have fallen in #SanFrancisco during this winter’s #CaWx storms. These two are at the #BeachChalet soccer fields in #GoldenGatePark.
@brentsleeper I do wonder how much of this might have to do with sandy soil forcing relatively shallow roots?
@burritojustice @brentsleeper the root systems Of trees I’ve seen don’t seem terribly well thought out for sand. I guess a lot of water comes in from fog so makes sense to collect near surface but terrible idea structurally.
@dplattsf @burritojustice I’d think Monterey cypress as a coastal native would be well-adapted for sandy environments? But maybe rocky not sandy?
@dplattsf @burritojustice Though it looks like your photo is eucalyptus, so I’m just blathering on.
@burritojustice @brentsleeper it’s cypress or something non eucalyptus. The eucalypts didn’t necessarily fare much better. they lost a lot of limbs in particular.
@burritojustice Mike Sullivan of sftrees.com could tell us in a jiffy. I think he’s only on Instagram these days.
