Hello. I am a Briton who spent half his life in the US and is now living in Amsterdam. Quite soon I will be Dutch.

After the repeated mendacity and hostility from UK gov't officials, a gov't that got re-elected twice after Brexit, no one trusts the UK not to be evil and dishonest at everyone's expense, even against their own self-interest.

A collapsing economy and society would not be an asset to the EU, unfortunately.

No, a rogue and collapsing UK trying to undercut the EU as a neighbour is the last thing the EU wants. As many EU politicians have asserted, the UK will be welcomed back. It's on us to make sure negotiations begin as soon as possible.

Surely after all these years, the argument that "they can't get by without us" has to have been completely discredited now.

The UK will never give up the pound and never give up its special status.There would have to be negotiations where the UK stopped lying and yelling, and actually offered to give things up.

This just won't happen.

@TomSwirly @Pierrette @fencoul @sevignes @Aviva_Gary We have no idea what condition the UK could re-enter on. We just need to begin negotiations to find out - have that national debate. The alternative is a dying economy, increasing poverty and eventual stagnation. We certainly can't go on with that.

👆 IMO the "U"K🇬🇧 will dissolve before even attempting #EU🇪🇺 re-entry.

The entities attempting re-entry will be:

• Independent Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿;
• Independent Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿;
• N🇮🇪 as part of reunited 🇮🇪;
• Even Independent
England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

3 are shoo-ins ✔; England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is much more of a problematic #BasketCase

It sounds magical. I know the Scottish would be happy about that.

My wife and I did think about moving to Scotland, but it is simply so cold and dark there.

@fencoul @moranicly @TomSwirly @Pierrette @sevignes @Aviva_Gary Disagree on Irish reunification being a shoo-in: it'll happen eventually, but needs more than a generational demographic shift before it can be accomplished without serious violence breaking out. Might work before 2060 as some sort of federal agreement. Needs the crazier unionist neo-fash to die of old age first, though.
@cstross @fencoul @moranicly @TomSwirly @Pierrette @sevignes @Aviva_Gary We are closer to a UI than you think. The demographics have already shifted, it’s just poverty holding some areas back.
@cstross
Agree. There is more to a successful unification than achieving 50%+1 of the vote

Why not just kick out England. The rest of you all seem mostly sane.
