Rather than focusing on only some companies, Congress should pass legislation that makes Americans’ data safe no matter what platform it’s on—TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, or anywhere else that’s profiting from our private information. https://act.eff.org/action/stop-the-restrict-act-and-pass-real-privacy-legislation
Stop the Restrict Act and Pass Real Privacy Legislation

Under the guise of curbing data collection by foreign governments, the RESTRICT Act (Senate Bill 686) would set the stage for a restriction on the use of TikTok, but not do nearly enough to truly protect our private information. Due to undefined mitigation measures coupled with a vague enforcement provision, the bill could also criminalize common practices like using a VPN or side-loading to install a prohibited app.

@eff

It's mind-boggling that all non-US, eurocentric countries don't do it.

We shouldn't trust American corporations any more than Chinese ones.

@eff everyone should own their own data and be able to charge these companies for its use

@eff

Restrict is a PATRIOT ACT level surveillance bill that aims to allow government employees to dismiss your privacy on a whim. It should be called the BIG BROTHER ACT because 1984-like digital surveillance is exactly what it is seeking to establish. Do you want your local police to gather around a computer screen to watch your teen daughters exiting the shower on your home security system? That's the type of behavior RESTRICT will eventually encourage. TikTok my ass.

@eff It seems CA has taken action. Is it because there is too much campaign financing/money? If that is the reason, one can't serve money and also serve people. So until that is fixed....
@eff The Right to Privacy was the foundation of Roe v Wade. The Scotus claimed that right had a shaky foundation in law, which is why they were able to overturn it. A robust law to codify that right would solve the abortion issue as well as ensure data privacy for Americans.
@eff it also shouldn't make open source hosting services and projects, distros, fiscal sponsors, etc a prioritized target. This seems really bad: "(C) machine learning, predictive analytics, and data science products and services, including those involving the provision of services to assist a party utilize, manage, or maintain open-source software;"

@eff
Now that our data is being fed to AI by all sorts of organisations for mining, I think our destiny is Skynet...

Law makers who use our data have an interest in protecting our data?
@evan

@eff yes, and also ban TikTok outright too.
