🧔🏼‍♂️"No one watches women's sports! If the little girls want to earn as much as manly men, they should get their numbers up! That's just like, economics man!"

But also...

Women's basketball viewership is growing faster than men's basketball, and the most viewed women's game on ESPN this year has *higher* viewership than the most viewed men's basketball game.

https://www.kare11.com/article/news/local/breaking-the-news/womens-college-basketball-sees-higher-tv-ratings-than-nba-women-sports-leaders-arent-surprised/89-e3591e0c-62bb-4e48-b96a-7c83fa60b4c7

All the excuses are falling away. Just like we said that they would.

🧔🏼‍♂️"Well, pro basketball is about dunks! Very few women can dunk! If we lowered the rims, more people would watch women's basketball!"

🤦🏿‍♂️No. We just covered that more people are watching women's basketball anyway.

And the highest paid NBA player, who also just signed the biggest NBA player endorsement deal in history, is Steph Curry. Steph rarely dunks.🤷🏿‍♂️

Just watch the South Carolina vs Iowa highlights. Caitlin Clark is a generational talent. NBA players are fans.

@mekkaokereke she is the most complete player I can remember seeing in my adult life - a beast!
@mekkaokereke I watched her smoke Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game and should've picked Iowa in my office bracket then and there. Instead I picked South Carolina and she trashed my bracket 🤦

@seenigel I'm a South Carolina fan. They were a better team. But Caitlin Clark is incredible.

I wish the refs wouldn't have ticky tack fouled Aliyah Boston in the 1st half, but even if they hadn't, I still think Iowa would have won. Clark is just too good, and too competitive.

@mekkaokereke The frustrating thing is the urge to be sexist appears to be overriding their love of money. The last TV coverage contract the NCAA signed for Women's basketball was by every metric way undervalued.

They only allowed the Women's tournament to be marketed with "March madness" as of 2022.

They seemed to prefer to be sexist than to make money!

@mekkaokereke If they start messing with the purity of basketball the way they have with baseball, I'mma start watching curling.
@mekkaokereke she shoots the 3 on the move as well as anyone I’ve seen outside of Steph Curry. She runs some beautiful PnR as well.
@mekkaokereke amazing. I saw the highlights from the win over LSU and YouTube’s of previous games
@mekkaokereke on related/unrelated note, am I reading too much into the fact that NYT has been raving and writing about Caitlin Clark and very little about players from South Carolina or even the winners LSU until now?

@khadersyed

Nope. Not reading too much into it.

And it's another missed opportunity. They would make *more* money if they focused more on the Black women in the NCAA and WNBA. The racial bias costs them money. In a way, they *pay* to do this.

@mekkaokereke there's going to be an interesting case in hockey in a few years: there's currently a young woman playing in a men's junior league in Europe who is absolutely creaming opponents. She is posting stats even better than last year's NHL number 1 draft pick, who played in the same European junior league.

Women can't shoot? Women can't play in a checking league? Pffft.

@predrag What is her name?

@mekkaokereke Nela Lopušanová, from Slovakia.

In 16 games played in the U16 men's league so far, she has 23 goals and 29 assists: an average of 3+ points per game!

@mekkaokereke for folks that prefer to watch video instead of reading stats, here are a couple of highlights:

She scored a Michigan goal on the tournament's heavy favorites, Sweden. The Swedish goalie's body language reaction was priceless: "How was I supposed to stop that?"

@predrag @mekkaokereke if she can compete with the guys, let her play. It’s about skills.
@Entropy @mekkaokereke absolutely! I look forward to seeing her in the NHL in a couple of years.

@predrag I suggested some time ago on Reddit that a good number of the competitive sports that young people play could be divided into classes by ability instead of by gender, and I was met with all kinds of hostility.

Admittedly, I don’t watch or participate in sports, so I could be completely wrong, but American Ninja Warrior doesn’t have a separate course for women, and yet…

@mekkaokereke I watched my first NWSL soccer game last weekend and quickly realized I didn’t spend any time watching the players writhe in pain on the ground clutching their legs. In MLS games there seems to be an awful lot of that.

@mekkaokereke I probably watch more women’s sports than men’s nowadays.

And more in person, too.

@rfpludwick

The tickets are still more affordable, but that creates this extreme rush where they are *really* hard to get. The games and matches sell out way faster.

A US Women's National Team versus England soccer match ticket is one of the most exclusive tickets in all of sports right now. So hard to get! They sold out Wembley in 15 minutes! For a friendly! Total pre-sale was under 24hrs.🤯

It's still affordable for local teams (e.g. NWSL), but that might not last.

@mekkaokereke are you an nwsl fan? who's your team?

@shauna

I like OL Reign, Thorns FC, and Angel City. I can't call myself a real fan though, as I still haven't been to a game in person for either club (pandemic), and don't watch every game of the season for either team. I'd fail the "So you're an OL Reign fan? Then name every goal scored this season!" test.🙂

I like certain players: Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle, and Olivia Moultrie. At age 12, Moultrie turned down an NCAA "offer" to play for free at UNC. Her Nike deal was more than tuition anyway.

@mekkaokereke I dunno I feel like if you care enough to have favorites than you're a real fan. And your favorites are good ones! I always root for the Reign unless they're playing my home team, the Washington Spirit. Partially because they have Rose Lavelle. And because the rest of their squad is full of nerds. Bethany Balcer wears number 8 so she can be BB8 and Phallon Tullis-Joyce, the goalkeeper, has an incredible 9-part video series abt octopi invading the Puget Sound https://twitter.com/phallon91/status/1534658703680753666

@shauna @mekkaokereke just took my family to a Chicago Red Stars game yesterday! Too bad they lost to Houston 😭😭😭
@Lxtruong I'm impressed you braved the weather! My friend who also went said everyone looked like the wimdy fox
@shauna um yeah it was cold and windy af. Lots of people left at halftime but I forced my family to tough it out for full regulation time 😂 blankets and hand warmer things were key.
@Lxtruong @mekkaokereke @shauna as a Houston Dash fan I approve this message. #LuvYaDash
@mekkaokereke We’re Thorns annual members, and so far the prices are alright. I don’t anticipate that to last forever.
@mekkaokereke I just left a women’s pro soccer game in Tokyo. We are close to top of league (3rd), we won the Empress Cup in January, for players on the national team, but we have fewer spectators than the men’s team, in part because the promotion is not there.
@sigkate @mekkaokereke also, is Empress Cup an awesome name or what?
@Lxtruong @mekkaokereke yes, 皇后杯 is an awesome name for a cup. 😁

@mekkaokereke How is this LSU-Iowa national championship game not in prime time???

I guess the one plus is a lot of very young girls can watch the game before their bedtime.

@smach @mekkaokereke

Yeah, ridiculous. I was expecting it to be on tonight, checked the times, AND IT WAS ALREADY ON!

Lame. Wanted to watch, but couldn’t because of other midday commitments.

@mekkaokereke @Wraithe I've been promoting referring to them as "soccer" and "men's soccer" for this exact reason. (:
