Kimmel nails it: "If you want to keep your blue checkmark, you'll have to pay Twitter $8 per month, which will enroll you in an exclusive club of people dumb enough to pay Twitter $8 a month."

@MikeElgan
More than anything I object to Elon Musk because everything he does has become so painfully, transparently dumb and completely devoid of taste and style. He’s like Beavis and Butthead in a single body with too much money.
@MikeElgan People are taking the wrong message here, IMO: hate on current management (and twitter in general) as much as you like, but "pay a reasonable fee for an internet service" should be the LAST takeaway from this...
@meejah @MikeElgan sure but what are you getting for $8/month verses not paying? The “premium” feature set is anything but.
@trekologer @MikeElgan Nothing, twitter is garbage. That's why I'm exclusively here ;)
But let's make fun of that, not "pay for an Internet service" is what I'm trying to get at.
@trekologer @MikeElgan Like: you join an exclusive club of people dumb enough to continue to dump free labour _AND_ $8 into Twitter every month...at least :)
@meejah @MikeElgan let’s be clear — it is nothing more than selling entry to the blue check “club” to a bunch of right wing weirdos. Continuing to call it verified is silly. The only verification is that the payment posted.
@trekologer @MikeElgan this is already more "talking about bird-site" than I was hoping for today ;) but I totally agree: it's dumb.
I'm trying to express my frustration that "pay for internet things" seems to be basically swept up in the piling-on about bad Twitter decisions.
@meejah @MikeElgan I think (hope) that by now it is understood that if you’re not paying for a service, you’re the product. But advertising-sponsored content is so ingrained into society that I don’t know if it is even possible to break out of that mold.
@MikeElgan My brutal confession, I’ve paid more for less and more than once. Yet, I still avoided this trap. Working on escaping the Apple trap.

@Prometheus

For me its important what you are paying for. For a platform you use every day with no ads/tracking? Sure. But 8 per month with ads and tracking? PAYING for surveillance capitalism? Lol no.

But I’m pretty sure more and more will pay. Especially journalists, politicians and so on since “Mastodon is too complicated” and “the people are here” and “I need my reach and 8 per month is not THAT much right?”

@MikeElgan

@MikeElgan And musky wants businesses to pay $1000/month. Either twitter will be some sort of exclusive rich people social network or it’s going to finally go the way of the dodo. Hopefully the latter.
@MikeElgan Under Muskonian Rule, Twitter will continue to promote up-selling - would you like exclusive fries with that?
@MikeElgan $8 a month to vote in polls. BFFR

@MikeElgan Musk is charging $7 a month for basic services now. That starts April 15th..

Jamie

@MikeElgan is that like paying for aol 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️
@MikeElgan I love how Twitter's valuable checkmark just turned into a mark that lets other people know they should laugh at you.
