People are the product that social media has to offer. For people to pay in order to provide content to a for-profit company seems so silly to me, but people are silly so...

@moliver Paying for server uptime is not the same—and you know it!

Mastodon isn’t just free and open source, it comes with an AGPL license.

I can run Mastodon on my own hardware—for free. And many do just that.

But should you opt to pay for Mastodon, there’s a big difference between $8 to run your own server and $8 to be visible on Twitter.

@moliver Is this the part where you say “the Internet isn’t free”? Because everyone with a smartphone knows this.

The point is that Mastodon itself is free, both in the sense of “free as in beer” and “free as in freedom”.

I can download Mastodon, run it on my own hardware, and pay nothing except the price of bandwidth.

Can I download Twitter and run it on my hardware (legally)?

@moliver managed hosting is so cheap that anything under 500 users it's hard to even do the math. At 100 users, everyone pitches in $0.25/months maybe a little more if you want to buy the mods a latte
Yes, not free. But a smallish instance is cheap enough for anyone with a little savvy that it's not worth the effort to ask for donations

@atomicpoet @mmasnick @fediversenews I haven’t noticed the influx of new people like I did in November/December, but maybe that was more of a function of being part of the inflow myself. I am hopeful we will start to see more “official” accounts come online. A lot of companies and public institutions are going to balk at having to pay if they want visibility!

I think it is part of the human condition to haggle. And you can’t haggle as easily over a huge sum for a big identifiable purpose.

No wonder. At this rate, you will have to pay just to fend off cryptobros, elmo-bootlickers, fascists, putintrolls, and other right-wing propagandists.

Twitter used to be interesting because it offered an alternative to FB back in the days, which allowed it to create a multi-varied fauna of various groups talking about all sorts of topics while a moderation team checked for proper conduct.

Nowadays that's all gone because some billionaire baby wanted to have a sandbox to dig holes and act like the boss of the sandbox.

The platform was virtually dead the second Elmo got involved in how things are run. /shrug

I have zero interest in being on a site where only Twitter Blue users can engage in discourse.

@Jofish5000 Thank you, kindly. It was tough, and literally was the only reason I had held off for so long. I have the text messages saved as well, and read through them whenever I’m missing him a lot. We texted daily for years, so there are many reminders of happy times to lean on.
