why do we pretend to sleep to fall asleep
@shanselman "fake it, till you make it" applies to more than just work
@shanselman Our mind probably uses that trick to fool our body into submission. No need to pretend if you’re exhausted though, you’ll pass out instead 😵
@shanselman because we pretend to be awake to *phone buzzes on desk*, *slack notification on desktop*, *teams notification on brain implant*.
@shanselman Who’s “we”? I’m still wide awake.
@shanselman I wish I had a sleep mode like the computer has. Would make things so much easier. :D
@shanselman I've... never though about it... and now I can't stop!
@shanselman the alternative is this…
@shanselman because our brain is not in sleep state ( to alert due external affectors) take some book (paper or e-ink with warm backlight) read it - it calms down (mostly) nervous system and prepares for sleep
@shanselman To dull out the senses. Otherwise, the brain works itself to exhaustion and then you’ll fall asleep (pass out) whether you want it or not.
@shanselman I pretend to read to fall asleep
@shanselman "We are what we pretend to be" - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. in "Mother Night"

@shanselman My guess is we pretend to sleep for cultural reasons. There is evidence biphasic sleep would be the norm for adults without electic lighting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biphasic_and_polyphasic_sleep

The wakeful time in the middle of the night was a prime time for causing mischief, so there were social reasons to stigmatize being awake at night as a wicked thing.

Also for teamwork to be successful it helps if everyone is around at the same time.

@shanselman you mean you don't read until you drop your phone/kindle/whatever?
@shanselman and furthermore, where do we go
@shanselman been wondering about that myself
