Is it just me, or do the deficit hawks in Washington magically disappear when Republicans are in charge and explode the national debt?

The notion that the GOP actually cares about the deficit is one of the biggest lies in American politics.

@rbreich Second only to "they care about life."
@rbreich The Conservative party in Canada has the same issue. They're lauded by media saying they're the most fiscally responsible party but their record tells a very different story. When in power they cut taxes for the upper income and explode the deficit. 100% con job.
@rbreich it’s only business, every dollar democrats spend, is one less dollar Republicans split with their sponsors.
@rbreich "Deficit hawks" are actually "Spending on stuff that doesn't enrich the right people hawks." That's why, when they are in power, they shift spending to (and shift away taxation from) the "right people," regardless of what it does to the deficit.
@rbreich “the deficit” is a rhetorical stick to hit Dems with, nothing more
@giantspecks @rbreich Yup. They run up the deficit while they're in charge, then expect Democrats to fix it when they're not
@rbreich I'm sure the line in our leading news outlets is that everyone knows the Republicans are lying when they claim to be concerned about the deficit, so it's not news that they are lying.
@rbreich same as in Australia. The conservatives who’ve just been voted out, have left an eye watering budget deficit, and we’re only now uncovering rorts and massive pork barrellingz thankfully we have the equivalent of the Dems in govt now. Hopefully they can fix the damage and put us back on a pathway to net zero emissions, and a more humane, better educated, more healthy & intelligent, caring society.
@rbreich as I remember it, the moment Biden was elected, Republicans started worrying about the deficit again. Nevermind how much it went up while Trump was in office - even before Covid
@rbreich Fiscal conservative is a punchline of a terrible joke on America.
@rbreich that’s exactly how it works, and that’s exactly what Reagan did in the ‘80s. Two Santa Claus model.
@rbreich There are many deficit hawks embraced by the Democratic Party. See: Larry Summers. We will never fix this problem if we keep pretending it's a partisan issue.
@rbreich Nope. They are eerily quiet and nonexistent whenever Republicans want to spend money.
