The more I think about it, the harder it becomes to justify using Twitter. If we aren’t gonna play the wizard game when the creator uses her resources to support transphobic causes, how can we justify using Twitter when its owner does the same? Yes, the reach on Twitter is broader for creators, but can’t that same logic be applied to streamers playing the game knowing there was a market for it when they depend on engagement to live too?

I can’t justify one over the other.

Yes, it’s easier to promote shit on Twitter. Even though I have a “real job” I’m still a performer and a portion of my monthly income is derived from streams, podcasts, merch, and folks following those things because of my performances live as well. We live in a world where to not be seen is to starve in that arena - and I’m trading off a significant amount of reach there to come elsewhere.

But I can’t justify being a part of that platform’s engagement anymore.

I don’t want to be a remora on the friend-eating shark that is Musk’s Twitter.

In no small part because remoras primarily live on shit.

@BoozyBadger I applaud your determination.

For what it's worth, I've found that I get WAY more interaction on here than I ever did on twitter, but of course I've never had a following like you do.

@leafygreens YOU REALIZE THIS EXTENDS TO THE OTHER ACCOUNT TOO, RIGHT?
@BoozyBadger Was there a recent change in Twitter's policy that caused this?
@Ferles The owner has become more vocal about his anti-trans and right wing views, and recently began boosting through his interaction posts that are blatantly intended to dehumanize trans folks in the wake of the Nashville shooting.
@BoozyBadger Been saying this for a while. And getting the whole “It’s false equivalence! I was there before Elon! It’s ours and we’re going to fight for it!” Blah blah from folks.
@LeoBurr @BoozyBadger Can try to fight all they want, but this isn't the town square or rights. At the end of the day, unless he ever sell it, he owns Twitter and could just pull the plug if he wants to. While I think a single billionaire shouldn't own it, that isn't the reality we live in.
@Zordrak @BoozyBadger Oh, I agree. But for whatever reason, trying to claim equivalence between Rowling and Musk unleashes a torrent of anger and claims of false equivalence. There are still a large number of folks who see Mastodon/The Fediverse as for elitists and Twitter for everyone else with diverse support structures that they feel will remain. Though Musky continues eroding that, they refuse to see it. They don’t get that the “I was here first. He bought it with me in it” attitude doesn’t matter.

@BoozyBadger my sense is that hypocrisy is no longer a significant measure of morality for most people. The majority of people visible to me on social media are choosing convenience/attention/profit (hypocrisy) over their own stated moral causes quite frequently these days.

I am not free of guilt on this point either!

@thumper @BoozyBadger

Right? I dumped Twitter and ebay and Amazon, but kept PayPal. It's also awful and run by an awful person. But if you cut off too many links to these behemoths, you feel immobile. You can't donate to your buddies or a good local group, etc.

@BoozyBadger The network effect is a not inconsequential distinction. My social circles have mostly moved over, but there’s a few niche hobbies I was involved with on Twitter that have had *zero* uptake here on Mastodon. I’m well passed my like, second or third breaking point, but I conceptually understand the stranglers.
@BoozyBadger what really did it for me was the fact that the bird app has no practical usefulness anymore. All it wants me to be is as angry as possible and I don't want to live like that.
@BoozyBadger Agreed and feel the same. Am going to try and focus here now.
@BoozyBadger I think the closest thing to justification is that JKR was always that way, whereas the bird site was taken over. A lot of people got caught with their pants down. No back up plan, the daunting process of starting over, and inate difficulty in changing platforms.
