Hi everyone! Decided to finally take the Mastodon leap and am shutting down my Twitter. For those who do not know me: I'm in eighteenth-century studies with approaches from book history, women's lit, and digital humanities and I dabble quite a bit in studies in sexuality, empire, and colonialism.

This guy did 3 x 10 minute videos. They saved me months of learning when I joined in November.

This site is all about hashtags to search for topics.

But following people also works like the other site.

Setting up your browser is important (as shown in the videos).

But if you live on your phone there are tons of good apps that have the same functionality. I use Tusky for Android.

Might be a dumb question, but on my laptop, I don't see three seperate columns for home, local, federated? Just them as a list to the right of my feed (witchh I leave on local!)

@Sfwmson @grubstreetwomen

Do you have the "Enable advanced web interface" option ticked?

@emarktaylor @grubstreetwomen

Oh damn...I do now! (Can you tell I am not a technical person, even after the video showed me what to do?) This makes me happy, thanks!

It's all new. The bird site gives you one view - this gives you options (eg. the advanced option that gives you a browser that looks like Tweetdeck).

Ditto for Apps on your phone. There is a Mastodon one - but folks seem to prefer other Apps and they have choices available for those.

When you get comfortable you'll be able to manage the columns so you get a feed for your interests.

Mine is below - I have Home, Notifications and some for my #Sports.

I'm getting the hang of it. Thank you!
