Hi everyone! Decided to finally take the Mastodon leap and am shutting down my Twitter. For those who do not know me: I'm in eighteenth-century studies with approaches from book history, women's lit, and digital humanities and I dabble quite a bit in studies in sexuality, empire, and colonialism.
@grubstreetwomen *waves* Welcome! 🚲 🧁 📚
@grubstreetwomen welcome to a much more positive place for discussion and debate.

@grubstreetwomen

Oh, neat, welcome to Mastodon. You sound like someone I should follow. :)

#TwitterMigration

This guy did 3 x 10 minute videos. They saved me months of learning when I joined in November.

This site is all about hashtags to search for topics.

But following people also works like the other site.

Setting up your browser is important (as shown in the videos).

But if you live on your phone there are tons of good apps that have the same functionality. I use Tusky for Android.

How To Mastodon - Pt 1 - The New Social Social Media - Bye Bye Twitter!!

YouTube

@emarktaylor @grubstreetwomen

Might be a dumb question, but on my laptop, I don't see three seperate columns for home, local, federated? Just them as a list to the right of my feed (witchh I leave on local!)

@Sfwmson @grubstreetwomen

Do you have the "Enable advanced web interface" option ticked?

@emarktaylor @grubstreetwomen

Oh damn...I do now! (Can you tell I am not a technical person, even after the video showed me what to do?) This makes me happy, thanks!

@Sfwmson @grubstreetwomen #TwitterMigration
It's all new. The bird site gives you one view - this gives you options (eg. the advanced option that gives you a browser that looks like Tweetdeck).

Ditto for Apps on your phone. There is a Mastodon one - but folks seem to prefer other Apps and they have choices available for those.

When you get comfortable you'll be able to manage the columns so you get a feed for your interests.

Mine is below - I have Home, Notifications and some for my #Sports.

@emarktaylor @grubstreetwomen

I'm getting the hang of it. Thank you!

@emarktaylor I'm sure the videos are great, and if someone wants a deep dive they should do. But I think a lot of the resistance in switching among the (good) masses is that there's this idea that the fediverse *needs* 30 minutes of video to understand. Three of your bullet points summed it up: following people is the same as before (their name just has an @ something dot whatevs at the end of it), and download Tusky or a good iOS app. Search by hashtag. Then you're off!
@emarktaylor The quirks (no QRTs, sometimes someone's profile won't be up to date when you look through your app of choice) and etiquette (use captions and CWs) largely explain themselves from there.

@mathias

An IT professional had a different POV.

He'd been sent in the direction of the @feditips documentation / instructions and he was over the moon that someone had done something in video form.

Takes all sorts I guess.

But the Advanced View, how to follow hashtags and how to move instances advice that he covers in the videos was a worthwhile investment for me.

I am very happy I moved here.

@emarktaylor In depth is good for those who want it! I think there's absolutely value in the video version, as well as the written one. Those topics are all useful things to know about. Technologists like that gentleman (& me) will be more apt to take the time to consume longform. I just want to see "the other 90%", minus the trolls and bigots, make the leap - and I'm hoping we collectively find the messaging that makes them think it will be easy, because ultimately it will.
@emarktaylor Glad to hear you're liking it - I haven't looked back. Maybe the occasional birdsite pop-in for specific purposes (like good severe weather info - the US National Weather Service's forecast offices make very good use of tweets and haven't explored a fediverse version), but this is my social media home now. I've had many interactions I never would've on the bird.
@grubstreetwomen #welcome I hope you enjoy #Mastodon, it is so much better than the bird site.
@grubstreetwomen Good for you! You’ll be glad you made the move.

The Tamagotchi was the coolest invention around the year that I first started to use the Internet. It was the most basic level of Internet usage, just using my dad’s giant desktop computer to poke…

@grubstreetwomen How interesting! Welcome aboard :)
@grubstreetwomen so pleased to see you here, Kate. Welcome!
@grubstreetwomen Kate!!!!!!!! Hi welcome so glad to see you!

@grubstreetwomen

welcome!

I'm also a bird site refugee, finding a home here on Mastodon.

I'm all over the map with my interests but essentially I post about #running, #hiking, #cats, #gardening, #traveling & whatever I'm #reading

@grubstreetwomen

Welcome! I hope you'll like it here. It's a more laid back place, and people are so much nicer.

@grubstreetwomen Welcome!

One of the big differences is that Mastodon runs on hashtags. If you edit your intro post to include the hashtag #/introduction, and you add a list of tags for your interests at the bottom, it will help likeminded people find you here more quickly. You can also subscribe to hashtags.

The @feditips account is also great to follow for lots of advice to get you settled in here.

It's a good place overall. I hope it's a great new home for you.

@grubstreetwomen

Welcome. We’re happy you’re here!

@grubstreetwomen I hadn't heard of digital humanities as a field of study. TIL. Thanks for sharing!
@grubstreetwomen Welcome in from the dark!

@grubstreetwomen
Welcome to the monkey house! 🐒

There's room temperature generic grape soda and cheetos available in the lounge. Help yourself.

@grubstreetwomen Hi Kate, welcome onboard! You may find that your feed is a little slow at first. The trick is to follow a bunch of people, and perhaps try to find some hashtags that interest you, too. There is no algorithm to suggest content for you (and we love it!).
@grubstreetwomen Welcome to your new home! It's way nicer than the last place we were all at.

@grubstreetwomen Welcome!

If what you wrote on your profile is true, you are going to have a much better experience here than in Twitter.

Just follow some hashtags of your interest and post and engage with others using the relevant hashtags.

Have a great week ahead!
