New paper "Comparing Theories with the Ising Model of Explanatory Coherence" in Psychological Methods with Noah van Dongen and @dennyborsboom.

Psychologists want better theories, but it is hard in practice to assess a theory's quality. For example, when is it worthwhile to add more assumptions to explain more phenomena?

To help assess the quality of theories, we developed a computational model to assess the coherence between the components of a theory using the Ising model.

We demonstrate the resulting Ising Model of Explanatory Coherence (IMEC) on several contemporary and historic examples. The model is available in the R package IMEC so researchers can compare theories in practice. For details see our paper (open access)!
