Mass shootings in the US:

2014: 273
2015: 336
2016: 383
2017: 348
2018: 336
2019: 417
2020: 610
2021: 690
2022: 647

In the first 13 weeks of 2023: 129

We do not have to live like this. No other country on the planet does.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia But thank goodness we're "safe" from drag shows...🤦‍♂️😡

We could have multiple mass shootings daily (We do some days) and the GOP will never change...

@rbreich @inequalitymedia They tax gas to keep our roads alive.

Perhaps they need to tax bullets to try and keep our kids alive.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia "The suspect — who was wielding two “assault-style” rifles and a pistol — also died after being shot by police. Authorities said she was from the Nashville area. Her motive in the attack has not been determined.

The killings come as communities around the nation are reeling from a spate of school violence, including the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last year; a first grader who shot his teacher in Virginia; and https://www.chicagotribune.com/nation-world/nashville-school-shooting-20230327-7lkfbj6hw5eexj6gjrk4inmhbq-story.html

@rbreich @inequalitymedia I live in Charleston, SC, and the gun culture is very strong here and I am frequently afraid to be out in public anywhere. Drivers are bullies.

Evangelical MAGA's heavily armed. I've seen far too many of these on pickup trucks here. The first one is very intimidating to drive behind!

@rbreich @inequalitymedia I do think the American like mass shootings, if you do not like it then you take actions to stop it.
@rbreich DEAD on. Although, I might say instead, "We do not have to die like this".
@rbreich @inequalitymedia yup - and we look at you from over the sea, and even though we have a pretty nasty and stupid culture in many ways, we really don't have many mass shootings, or shootings at all ... the notion that a gun owning population is safer is wholly idiotic. If we had easy access to guns here, given the otherwise high rates of violent crime, we'd probably be as bad as the US.
@rbreich @inequalitymedia Actually, we have to live like this as long as people misinterpret the #secondamendment .
If we perform a modern interpretation, the Right to Bear Arms is third. First is
a Well Regulated Militia. Today that means means a Regulated Police Force. That means the police force should be regulated, and has the right to bear arms to insure we live in a free state.

The original text of the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia The only times a politician shows their support for the #secondamendment are when they fire a gun at an #NRA photoshoot, and when voting the way they are told to by the gun industry.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia

All of the evidence is that Americans do have to live like this…and die like this

@rbreich @inequalitymedia

I sincerely wish we didn't live like this, but we have one small problem: There are more guns than people in the US now. How many folks do you think will relinquish theirs? It is a lot like shouting "close the gate!" when all the horses are already out! Even if we totally restrict new purchases and make ownership illegal it would take many, many years to make a dent in the problem. We could start, but be prepared for disappointment.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia
While France is in turmoil due to a law change to increase the retirement age to what feels (to me) a reasonable 64 years (one of the lowest in Europe), in the USA, the most powerful modern country in the world, people get killed in ridiculous increasing numbers just because they have laws from the cowboys era that, in the XXI century people don't seem to have the will or strength to change (not really sure).

It's puzzling. (to say the least)

@rbreich @inequalitymedia

I don't want to speak for anyone else but myself but I must say it feels like the rest of the world looks on aghast at the US.

Folks regularly mass shooting fellow citizens, often in schools! and somehow that's just the norm

Reverse it, if it was in Mexico, China or Russia and didn't happen in the US, how would it be perceived?

@rbreich @inequalitymedia The increase is almost all right-wing terrorism too.
@rbreich @inequalitymedia Unfortunately we _do_ have to live like this because amending the constitution is all but impossible on this point.
@rbreich @inequalitymedia The astonishing thing is this seems to be OK with many Americans, while a little bit of nakedness (David etc.) **rediculously** isn't. Here in Europe, everybody finds both of theses attitudes mad. Both problems somehow seem to be connected.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia I get your point but:

Countries with the Highest Total Gun Deaths (all causes) in 2019

Brazil — 49,436
United States — 37,038
Venezuela — 28,515
Mexico — 22,116
India — 14,710
Colombia — 13,169
Philippines — 9,267
Guatemala — 5,980

@rbreich But no other country is infested with Republicans.
@rbreich Going to catch up to trump's murder of Americans by Covid bad response.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia

Texas: 23,700,000 licensed drivers
Number of trans drivers in Paxton’s 1934 Germany-style files: 16,466

That’s 0.0695%. Probably low, too, since the trans demographic is not as wealthy as the average and Paxton would have missed a few ambiguous instances.

@rbreich data: 4171 mass shootings since 2014.

One trans suspect: 0.0240% of suspects. If the label is true.

We’re less likely than average to do a mass shooting.

PS the number for drag queens is around 0.000%

@rbreich @inequalitymedia

I think it's very odd that most mass shootings don't happen at mass.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia "Among 64 high-income countries and territories, the United States stands out for its high levels of gun violence. The US ranks eighth out of 64 for homicides by firearm (age-adjusted). Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, two US territories, rank first and third on that list. Firearm injuries tend to be more frequent in places where people have easy access to firearms, according to findings https://www.healthdata.org/acting-data/gun-violence-united-states-outlier
On gun violence, the United States is an outlier

When we look exclusively at high-income countries and territories with populations of 10 million or more, the US ranks first for its high levels of gun violence.

@rbreich @inequalitymedia its part of what is driving the decreasing life expectancy in the US. It may even be the leading cause of death…. In children!
