After that, an unreliable & legally inadmissible drug test on the couple comes back positive for substances they deny taking.

Yeah, I hit the character limit and had to rely on the article preview to make that point ... though as you say, in the US, it's a pretty safe assumption in these cases that the persecuted parties are BIPOC.
