I’ve been streaming our kid’s games for my parents. Sadly, the streaming service shut down.

So, I’m switching to YouTube, but I need to get 50 subscribers before I can live stream on mobile.

I can’t believe I’m going to be asking people to “subscribe” like some YouTuber.

What are the implications of someone subscribing? Will it be annoying to someone if they’re not another parent? How much of an imposition is it?

Oh, and if you want to help me reach 50, subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/@jasonlgrigsby

YouTube

I probably should mention that my plan has been to get parents and players on the two teams to subscribe because they are the ones who benefit.

But because I haven’t used YouTube subscriptions much, I don't really know what I'm asking of people.

Outside of being yet another person asking people to "Like, rate, review, and subscribe," is asking people to subscribe a big deal? Are they going to get overwhelmed with notifications? Is it a big pain?

I'm curious about what I'm asking of people.

@grigs often hear Youtubers ask folk to hit the bell icon too which turns on new video notifications - so don’t think it’s a big ask. Your uploads will show up in their ‘Subscriptions’ feed on Youtube, but depending on the platform UI your channel isn’t likely to appear particularly prominently in their sidebar list as it seems bigger Youtubers end up at the top of that based on channel size etc
@grigs It will depend a lot on their device settings and settings for YouTube itself, either web or app. If they Subscribe, your channel will have an indicator on their Subscriptions tab. If they also turn on the bell, they’ll get a notification, that may be email or mobile notification like banner or badge, but that will all depend on their overall notification settings. I personally have all that off. I just watch new subscription videos as I have time and notice them. Hope that helps.
@anniegreens very helpful. it sounds like subscribing shouldn't be a big impact on folks unless they hit the bell. That's what I was hoping for.
@grigs done! I’ll probably unsubscribe after a while when you have enough followers haha. (Have done this for people before)
@Anneke do you know what happens if the count goes under 50? Do I lose the ability to stream again?
@Anneke Oh, and thank you for subscribing and supporting youth sports. :)
@grigs no idea! I can’t imagine they’d take stuff away- but I have no idea :)
@grigs Subscribed! (I'm guessing I can mute later if needed) However, I'm pretty sure you need to promote it with some sort of 'Jason in shock' type face? ;-)

@grigs If youtube doesn't work out(hope it does🤞), another option might be GameChanger. I don't know about its usefulness for lacrosse, or video quality (they say 720), or if you've already looked into it. We've used it for my daughter's softball games…and they say they support lacrosse. *and it's not free, so if cost is an issue, sorry.

Good luck either way.

@Wubbels Game changer might work. I’ll take a look. Thank you.

@Wubbels It is so promising, but I think it won't work for us. It appears to be designed for coaches to set up so it expects you to add rosters, practices, games, etc. into the app.

That wouldn't be a big deal, but it appears to require you to create an account in order to view the videos even if you say "anyone" can view the video.

Finally, the score keeping appears to require a separate app which is a bummer. MyCuJoo's broadcast app allowed us to do it on same phone as streaming.

@Wubbels It is soooo close to what I need though. Thank you for sharing it.

@grigs Bummer. Sorry to hear that.

FWIW, before our team was well organized, I just created a team and didn't worry about the rosters, practices, etc, which allowed me to share stats/video with little to no problems.

@Wubbels That's what I was trying to do. I honestly thought I was succeeding until I shared a link and it asked me to log in.

It said it would send a login link, but never did.

The need for an account to view the stream is annoying. One of the nice things about YouTube is that it is an app on most Smart TVs. So we can tell someone, open YouTube and search for jasonlgrigsby or [insert team name] and you'll find the stream.

@Wubbels That said, I really wish Game Changer worked because YouTube doesn't allow me to select specific camera zoom levels. It is all pinch and zoom which makes it hard to make sure I'm on a good zoom level and not getting a lot of digital zoom artifacts. And YouTube doesn't have any scoreboard or replay options.

So close. Maybe they'll fix some of this stuff in a few months. I'll keep an eye on it.
