I feed the birds at my house. They let us know when we forget.

Songbirds want food, grackles usually are asking for water.

So much to learn and hear if you just listen. That got me thinking about some things...

The ChatGPT CEO had an interview with ABC news. The part that has gone viral is that he is afraid of what he created.

But that's not what I heard.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says AI will reshape society, acknowledges risks: 'A little bit scared of this'

"This will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed," he said.

He said:
"We've got to be careful here," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. "I think people should be happy that we are a little bit scared of this."
"I'm particularly worried that these models could be used for large-scale disinformation," Altman said. "Now that they're getting better at writing computer code, [they] could be used for offensive cyberattacks."

Why is he *just now* worried about this? Is it because now there is real competition?

I heard someone spurting FUD: be happy we care about this, we're the only ones who really do.

Why don't I trust him? He scrapped the entire web to build his model, and won't share anything about their training set. Let's not even get started on how humans who do the hard tagging of data are treated and compensated

The chief scientist & cofounder of OpenAI has this to say: “We were wrong. Flat out, we were wrong. .... at some point, A.I.—AGI—is going to be extremely, unbelievably potent, then it just does not make sense to open-source.... “at some point it will be quite easy, if one wanted, to cause a great deal of harm with those models. And as the capabilities get higher it makes sense that you don’t want to disclose them.”

Now that there is competition the executives at #OpenAI are wringing their hands, putting themselves out as the only source of truth and safety when it comes to these chatbots.

I am hearing textbook information imposter speech, not true remorse or truth-seeking behavior.

So how is this connected to the birds who communicate with me in my back yard?

I just started thinking of all the times when business leaders push ahead with a plan with dollar signs in their eyes, with no regard for the unintended consequences.

The first thing that came to mind was the Dawes Act and its impact to the tribes (and don't get me started on the descendants who lived in big cities like Atlanta).

They had to have known what would happen - but the money to be made on the land was too much of a pull to slow down and consider the humans.

What about the original drain the swamp rallying cry in Florida? It came from Governor Broward around 1905 so their would be more land ($$).

Death and destruction from storms and people angry from being ripped off (it sucks when you build on a swamp) were easy to see, but Broward had an election to win.

My backyard is a great place to meditate. I'm very thankful the birds let me know when I am neglecting them (actually it's been too dang cold).

I get to go outside and *think*. What happens if we can't find information anymore because the information is controlled by algorithms?

I think about that a lot these days....
