Is an air fryer just a trendily rebranded toaster oven or what?

I keep seeing youtube channels use them and I can't see how it's different from throwing something under the grill, except that an air fryer costs like $300 and the grill is already in my oven

(Americans: "broiler" for some reason)

@TheArtGremblin I mean probably? But the air fryer also has a convection fan and you can dial in a temperature.

@dancingmonkeys Wait, it has a fan /as well/ as a radiator, or it /just/ has a fan? If it's fan-only it amuses me even more since I have a fan-forced oven XD

@TheArtGremblin some have fans “as well” if they are multi mode. Mine always runs the fan. The form factor is nice because I can yank out the basket and shake the contents to flip them. Other than that you oven could probably replicate the effect.

@dancingmonkeys Ahh gotcha. So the main draw is probably the form factor really, not unlike a toaster oven.

@TheArtGremblin I have an old one, its pretty handy for cooking some chips fast. That's about it.... probably not worth getting a new one
