I tried playing #TheGroundItself for the first time recently.

After the game, we tried to figure out why we the world we created eventually developed hierarchies, oppression, and war. We didn't start it that way, and the rules of the game certainly didn't push us there.

I don't think we found a satisfying answer. We weren't capable of imagining a #utopia that night.

But I want to do better next time.

To some extent we wanted to tell a story about the problems we wrestle with.

But, it's very rare that a ttrpg gives me the opportunity to tell a story that doesn't focus on conflict.

It felt uncomfortable that when given that opportunity, dystopia was still our default. Something in all our minds said "to tell an interesting story, disaster and suffering are necessary."
