It's a podcast to fall asleep to. John Moe interviews people on subjects they can be dull about and witter on endlessly. Will me droning on about bagel-making, beekeeping and water kefir grains put you to sleep? Are Mastodon folk the kind who will listen to the end?

Neil Gaiman Will Not Name His Sourdough Starter | Maximum Fun

Neil Gaiman is perhaps least-known for his interest in SCOBY-s (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), but that will no doubt change now that this episode has aired. Gaiman is a bestselling author…

Maximum Fun
@neilhimself we can only do our best to try.
@neilhimself Beekeeping? Are you planning a Neil Gaiman mead somewhere down the line?
@neilhimself I don’t know, but I’m going to listen on the strength of the name alone!
@neilhimself
Combining two of my favorite things, you and Max Fun. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I bet l find it all somewhat interesting, and I find it hard to sleep when watching or listening to something interesting.

@neilhimself

bagel-making, water kefir grains, and beekeeping

If you order your topics thusly, I would get through all of it for sure, lol

@neilhimself I will give it a try & report back as to whether or not you put me to sleep 😆
@neilhimself good god, yes, I have to know about the best duration for boiling bagels (not to mention trying to figure out if the whole "New York water" thing really is A variable). Also need to figure out why our bees have absconded two years in a row. So perhaps I should give it a listen.

@neilhimself

The novel 'Sourdough' by Robin Sloan might be yr jam. Super fun.

Have you met your fanbase? :)

@neilhimself I only sleep to podcasts now; I have unintentionally conditioned myself after discovering a genre of monotone very detailed storytelling that reliably knocks me out
@paulrichwine @neilhimself Any specific recommendations? 🤓

@ipet @neilhimself Sorry, I was away. Here are my current favs:
https://www.nothingmuchhappens.com/ - Original stories told slowly
https://www.icantsleeppodcast.com/ - Monotone Wikipedia
https://www.boringbookspod.com/ - Public domain (old) book readings
https://www.sleepwithmepodcast.com/ - Meandering ramble

I subscribe to several others but I find these are the best for me. Hope this helps!

@neilhimself
This could be an interesting experiment. Wonder how far I'll get.
@neilhimself We make all those at our farm! Kombucha, water kefir, jun, sourdough, gingerale, pickled bamboo, limes, fish or even pork! Live-cultured food is an important part of our tradition. Not sure if any Mastodon folks are into it but today is our first day here, so we’ll soon find out! Ps. Listened to the podcast till the end and totally love it! 😊

@Happyearthfarm @neilhimself Oh, I'm into it and also yogurt varieties.
And there's lots of kitchen witches on Mastodon. You'll find your people 😊

Since you are new here, a tip: use hashtags for all these words so that people can find you. You can even edit your post to include them!

@lanIka @neilhimself Thanks so much for the tip! Will first start by following you. 💚 🙏 😊
@Happyearthfarm @neilhimself I mostly talk about design and cats, but you are very welcome :)
@neilhimself I'm nodding-off already and I just got up.
@neilhimself
I am sorry to report you did not put me to sleep. But it was lovely hearing your experiences with kefir, sourdough, bagel making, and Skye during lockdown. Thank you! ❤️
@neilhimself Oh I love that you and John know each other. Of course you do :) Two lovely people.
@neilhimself so in other words, accidental ASMR?
@neilhimself This must be very new to the Max Fun Network. I'll be sure to give it a listen.
@neilhimself I mean, i keep a couple of your audiobooks that you narrated permanently on my phone for when i have a panic/anxiety attack. throw some headphones on, fire it up and within a few minutes your soothing voice is helping me calm down
@neilhimself I suffer severe insomnia (and parasomnias) but I cannot tune to sleep with human voices, I sometimes use sleepcasts by headspace and at least I enjoy the storytelling to unwind and rest.
