Mastodon's just fine without Zuckerberg. 'Interoperable' means linked Mastodon accounts will get to see ads they normally have to go to Meta for.

That’s what they’ll do eventually — but first they’ll start with embrace and extend. They’ll pull people into using their own Mastodon instance, and then let the connectivity to other realms slowly bitrot once they get critical mass.

Then they’ll start the ads.

And then, they'll start making incompatible tweaks to their own version of the protocol.
