Every once in a while I come across the spicy take

That a queer character in media should be a character who "happens to be queer," not a "queer character"

Because that is the Right Way to do it

And sure, if it goes full squeecore that can be exhausting

But all I can hear is someone telling me that if they can tell that I'm a faggot, that's the wrong way of being gay

So, never repeat that nonsense around me thanks shut up forever

Every time a straight complains that gays are existing too much with their knowledge

I buy a slightly tighter pair of pants and wear them in public

Yes this is a threat

Dear younger queers:

You don't owe the straights your non-existence

@researchfairy I was lucky enough to have grown up around a lot of the old guard and I think people forget that that culture was a deliberate tactic. A way of pushing back against the people who wanted us to disappear and a way to signal a safe space to allies. In so many ways I feel like we have been forced back into the closet. Ragen couldn't censor us, but social media has found a way to make us censor ourselves.
@EmilsGameRoom @researchfairy I think this is a fantastic point and isn't talked about enough, how we're being forced to censor ourselves on social media and how negative that impact is becoming.
@researchfairy Sal Romano on Mad Men is no less valuable as a gay character because he is (to the audience) obviously gay. In fact his overt characterization makes a point about how invisible queerness was by necessity in midcentury professional life before the emergence of more open queer expression in the counterculture.
@frustratedantiquarian Oh I haven't seen that, is it worth getting into?
@researchfairy One of the best written, shot, cast, and costumed drama series I have ever seen. Currently on my third watch with my partner, and Sal's story in s1-3 breaks my heart every time.
