@onlyindevon Reminds me of a German Shepherd we had when I was a kid. When I'd throw a stick he'd invariably come back with a larger one, which he then refused to let go of. One time he didn't return at all and I had to follow the growling coming from the undergrowth ... where I found him attempting to drag an entire fallen tree!
