Make no mistake: History has already taught us in plain terms where this is headed if we do not collectively stop it in its tracks right now.

I am not an alarmist. I am historically literate, and we must all be in the face of this attack. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/when-they-call-for-eradication-it?sd=pf

When They Call for “Eradication,” It Means What It Sounds Like

History has vital lessons when it comes to brazen attacks on trans identity and people.

The Status Kuo
@jaykuo 1. You had to wonder, "You want to round people up now?" when news broke that TX AG Ken Paxton requested from the Dept. of Public Safety a list of individuals who changed their gender on their driver's licenses. While no such data was provided, it's still particularly chilling since the governor signed off on legislation targeting transgender people and their families. https://tinyl.io/80fQ
Texas attorney general’s office sought state data on transgender Texans

The behind-the-scenes effort by Ken Paxton’s office to obtain data on how many Texans had changed their gender on their licenses came as he and other Republican leaders in the state have been publicly marshaling resources against transgender Texans.

@jaykuo 2. A few years ago, TX Gov. Abbott pressed for a change in the ethics code for state social workers which would allow them to refuse services for disabled and gay clients. The state regulatory board reversed this change in the code, but it's definitely clear Abbott and his cohorts are on a mission. https://tinyl.io/80fX
Texas reverses decision that allowed social workers to deny LGBTQ, disabled clients

A Texas regulatory board reinstated nondiscrimination protections that had been removed this month at the recommendation of Gov. Greg Abbott.

NBC News

@SharonGibson3 @jaykuo "On a mission" is exactly right. If you look at the repeal of Roe Vs Wade you can see the depths of their cunning. They will GLADLY spend decades and billions of dollars shaping the foundation they need to impose their will on others. And once they're able to do so, they'll officially declare the US a Christian Nation in which they're free to be the sole interpreters and executioners of the "will of God."

Not because they believe, but because they want power.

@NerdiCorgi @jaykuo Like Gov. DeSantis, Abbott, et.al. in Texas have taken aim at education. In addition to school districts banning books, Abbott has gone on record instructing teachers to refrain from calling the KKK "an immoral organization" and pushing for teachers to present "both sides" of the Holocaust, which one can only conclude is a push to introduce Holocaust denial into the classroom.
@jaykuo I feel people are not taking these things seriously. And republicans are either dismissing these as "rants from these crazy folks", or too scared of losing votes to do anything, or are simply very comfortable with where this is going.
Republicans let TFG run wild for too long. Now they cannot reign him in.

@locksmithprime @jaykuo Why do you feel this way? (honest question)

The '22 turnout demonstrated the opposite. People, at least in purple states with contested races vs. terrible regressive-right/protofascist candidates came out in large number and elected Democrats.

I'm not saying we don't still have a LOT of work to do to ensure we continue to win elections where we won last year and win elections in more places that we didn't win.
I am saying ...

@locksmithprime @jaykuo that where we put in the work (and winning was a reasonable possibility) we won. There is every reason to believe that if we continue to put in the work, learn from our mistakes and expand winning strategies (like employing the race-class narrative framework) we can win again and in more places.
@joeinwynnewood @jaykuo You have a point. Voters mostly refused extremes.
@joeinwynnewood @locksmithprime @jaykuo I appreciate your optimism but many races were won on razor thin margins, and we lost the house. We live in a society that is embracing authoritarian beliefs at just about the 50% mark. GA is a prime example of what the R’s are willing to accept so long as they have control. I’m all for free speech, as I know who not to trust then, but I’m not convinced we are headed in a positive direction.
@mumscrumbs @joeinwynnewood @jaykuo Granted, everyone expected a full embrace of maga candidates last year. Red wave. A complete take over the House by a wide margin, as well as the senate.
Perhaps the resistance is silent, but not weak.
@locksmithprime @joeinwynnewood @jaykuo Fair analysis. I think I tend to struggle with optimism as I live in maga country and felt obligated in 2016 to disassociate with the majority of my community and family due to their intolerance (I do see the irony but I was angry all of the time trying to defend my beliefs). I still have my doubts but I guess letting a sliver of optimism in is possible.
@mumscrumbs @locksmithprime @jaykuo It would be great if you could find a few like minded people to hang out with at least once in a while. Building community in red places is really important, for mental health, to help people who don't want to be MAGA find an off ramp & to show reasonable people who think their vote doesn't matter that it very much does matter.
This is one of the very important ways we pad those razor thin majorities.
@jaykuo when they say shit like this in the open, on video, knowing people outside of that room will see it - then they have plans for much much worse.

@jaykuo

“The same right wing groups have already come not only for LGBTQ+ people but for women’s reproductive rights, for minority voting rights, and for press and academic freedoms. So this isn’t a drill. We know from history where this could lead if we fail to take a stand now.”

@jaykuo progressives have to leave red states and move to purple ones like North Carolina and Georgia and turn them blue. our only hope is a lock on the Senate and electoral college, we then have to rescue those from deep red states who want to be rescued. to save America is to save the world and if that means accepting deep red states turn into nightmarish landscapes, so be it. they will be like large insane asylums where we they can be crazy
@jaykuo why the fuck these guys have a logo like TV Channel Zvezda? 😃 I know a star was an American symbol long before it was a soviet symbol, but the photos from the conservatives' conference look so much like any russian propagandist televised meetup, I thought it is one at first 😃
@jaykuo This is becoming increasingly disturbing.
@jaykuo I’m already seeing the parallels with the ongoing book bans and challenges targeting BIPOC and LGBT+ literature. That, aside from the anti-trans crusade the Right is leading scares me, mainly because they’ve united in ways we on the Left need to. Your article’s beautifully written. Thank you.
