It was recommended to me as #solarpunk from a few sides, so I had high expectations.

And sure, there’s windmills and an ecological and anti-militaristic theme – but the community is also a monarchy (and almost all protagonists are royal), and there’s very little collective action.

Has anyone seen it and thinks differently? Did I miss something?

@lex

The “Our princess is the only capable person worth anything” is odd, but also Miyazaki really hits hard on monarchs in future films like Howl’s Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky.

No media is perfect and I think Nausicaa makes into this lists because of the pure water under the toxic jungles that actually protect it and danger of weaponizing nature much more than for the windmills.

@lex yeah, not so much solarpunk. The manga expands more on the greed and mistakes of humans, the only collective action comes from the ohmu
@lex if ever you are able to read the manga which the anime is based on, it is much more nuanced. And while Nausicaa is the hero of the story, it is a role she struggles with throughout. It is clear to her that inter-cast/inter-human/interspecies coexistence/cooperation is what is needed, as opposed to the biblical saviour figure she is forced to assume.
