"Woke? You mean practicing basic empathy? Valuing people who are part of your community?" - Kayla Kisseadoo was among the bright, motivated New College students Alex Wagner was able to speak with in Florida recently.
@rbreich Many of our young people are just so impressive. It gives you a good feeling.
@rbreich
It truly is all about censoring any points of view that don't align with these authoritarian Republicans...

@rbreich

that's not what woke means. wokeness argues that some good faith speech causes too much harm to be allowed. that argument threatens liberal democracy.

@wjmaggos @rbreich
Better tell Conservatives that definition. They use β€œwoke” in very different ways. (Yet none of them could put an actual definition to it.)
@wjmaggos @rbreich In its modern usage, woke appears to mean anything someone perceives as too liberal.

@rbreich Woke is, I think, one of those words of malleable definition, but the good folks at Merriam-Webster define it as:

: aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)

However, I think it can be used pejoratively (in either good OR bad faith) if awareness and attentiveness translates to action which, in the eye of -- or if it benefits -- the speaker is/can-be-twisted-to-be viewed as somehow over-the-top.

@rbreich Absolutely. As everyone knows, especially the frame of MATA (Make America Think Again) to be woke is simply to be mindfully aware, to enter into a state of being in empathy-with the other, the step point to finding that which is ethical, that which the other can go along with. It is simple Metaeconomics (Bing ... even ChatGPT it, although not completely accurate ... or Googel it, you migh like it)
