TechCrunch: Mammoth is a free Mastodon app for iOS that makes it easier to get started >>> https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/27/mammoth-is-a-free-mastodon-app-for-ios-that-makes-it-easier-to-get-started/

A new Mastodon app called Mammoth has already gained 10,000 downloads in the first few days of its availability on the App Store.

"Simply: we want to contribute to Mastodon having 10m active users, then 100m. It’s early days still, and we don’t want to do anything that slows down adoption,”

Update:

While "free" it seems that Mammoth [edit: encourages] users to register on their instance moth.social. They present this as "simplifying" sign-up, but some counter this is antithetical to the decentralized nature of the fediverse.

While currently "free" at some point this will change to a subscription model: "Therefore, we likely will have a subscription, but it won’t stop you from enjoying the app if you’re not paying. We don’t have all the details or the timing figured out yet.”

@mastodonmigration who actually objects to a client app making it easier for users who don’t have a fediverse account to be able to create one?
@anildash @mastodonmigration exactly this. if you’re concerned about vertical integration between client app and instance, then you’re missing the forest for the tree.
@anildash @mastodonmigration thinking about this again…since vertical integration (VI) *is* a move for control, i can see the reason for concern in a decentralized model. but if you’re concerned about VI, then the questions that need asking center around *how much* control any one *instance* has over the fediverse and whether VI is the reason for that control. if VI is at risk of becoming a corruptive force for the fediverse, then sure. but otherwise, why is improving UX ever a bad thing?
