I like how they NEVER showed the following warning in the earlier releases - for the longgest time. “Your employer or school” was the first one they added, I recall.

Your activity might still be visible to:

  • Websites you visit
  • Your employer or school
  • Your internet service provider

‘So called’ Geeks were the biggest evangelists of Chrome and are the ones to blame for its popularity - I guess it has to do with the Developer Tools. Also, “Google is genius. They have removed the File, View menu. Such saviors!”

@Deus @nixCraft the look and feel didn't appeal to nerds, it appealed to those who just wanted simplicity. But that wasn't the main reason.

IE had failed to keep up with standards (too busy trying to make their own). Firefox, Opera et al were mainly advertised by word of mouth. Most people didn't care about the browser they used until they were told to care about it on the most visited website on the planet.

Of course, yes. IE not keeping up with Web standards much to the frustration of ‘Webmasters’. The hate for MS propelled its popularity too. It was so edgy to type M$ back then.
