At least in Margaret Atwood’s novel the radical religious terrorists used guns to overthrow our government.

In the real version we’re literally electing them to office. I feel that not enough folks read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

They’re taking over state and local legislatures, councils and boards.

Christian Nationalists and Dominionists are absolutely a threat to our democracy.

They’ve had this plan for decades and now they’re enacting it. This is a clear and present danger.

@bleakfuture It's right there in the name but, damn, that's pretty bleak.
@Gustodon I’m a damn ray of sunshine, Gus!
@bleakfuture Some people are afraid of scorpions, or sharks. I feel that way about the overlap between religion and public policy.
@DroidEngineer quantum field theory?
@bleakfuture
lol i can't tell if you're pulling my leg.😆 quote for truth.
@DroidEngineer lol I had never heard that before 😬
@bleakfuture
i think it's an old reference and prolly says more about me knowing it than you not knowing it. ;)
@DroidEngineer lol potentially - I’m 43 and I’ve been around the internet since around ‘94 but it was on a 2400 baud modem when everyone else was screaming at 14.4k so I may have missed some stuff.
@bleakfuture
lol ok so i was about to write something similar, that qft was prolly in use when irc and nntp were used for chatting and news, respectively. and when archie and veronica were search engines. ;)
@bleakfuture
i was one of the luckier ones with a 14.4k and a slip ip address. but i also worked at an isp in '94 and we had portmasters (later TNTs) full of 28.8 modems. The sounds! haha
@bleakfuture It's feeling way too Germany in the late 1930's here.

@bleakfuture Well said with accuracy and eloquence.

If only we had quoted posts, I'd QP this sucker all year.

@bleakfuture There are groups out there that are fighting against this tsunami of extremist xtian creatures, such as https://www.au.org There are others, but AU has had significant success getting extremist legislation and school board initiatives into court citing violations of the principle of separation of church and state and winning these cases. A lot of the extremist BS goes on at the local level, so what AU is doing typically flies under the media radar. They're worth supporting.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State

The separation of church and state guarantees religious freedom, a fundamental American right promised by our system of government.

Americans United
@isotope239 I agree. So supper I shall! Thanks for the recommendation!
@bleakfuture Wonderful! With groups like AU taking these horrible xtian facists to court and the rest of us keeping a close eye on every local election and voting, we can make a difference.
@bleakfuture the part about enacting any plan is the cards which once held are now on the table. We should all be looking very closely and trying to understand their next moves. Ultimately I think they will fail and be pushed into the rubbish bin of history with other failed ideas.
@wyre I hope against hope you’re right. I just don’t know what the collateral damage becomes prior to them being swept into that bin.

@wyre @bleakfuture I'd have more confidence in that sentiment if people hadn't said the exact same thing in the late 1930s.

The idea that something won't happen because it's terrible is what allows it to happen.

@CorvidCrone @wyre when I typed collateral damage that’s what I was referring to.

There were a lot of monsters during WWII - we weren’t immune from that. We put Japanese Americans into camps.

@bleakfuture @wyre I was referring to Wyre's behind that they will ultimately fail.

The fascists might have lost the war, but they didn't go away and their ideas are like stubborn invasive weeds that keep popping back up.

@CorvidCrone exactly. I also replied and sort of mentioned the same.

I do believe fascism is like the monster from IT. You can’t really kill it, you just have to beat the shit out of it when you encounter it.

And be vigilant - it will return.

@CorvidCrone @bleakfuture they won't just go away you will have to fight them. right now the war hasn't even started yet. you'll know when it starts because all the media will suddenly become very quiet. they won't win though history has also taught us that bad ideas like this never last very long.

@wyre @bleakfuture obviously they're not going to just go away.

I disagree that their predecessors' ideas failed, because there is a direct through line from the first fascists to the present ones.

@CorvidCrone @bleakfuture and by fascists you mean Mussolini and the Italian fasicst party. straight line? interesting I'd like to hear more about it.

@CorvidCrone @bleakfuture @wyre

We can thank the failures of reconstruction after the civil war, oh and don't forget Operation Paperclip that imported "just the smart" Nazis after WWII.

@bleakfuture have just finished it again.
It's chilling
@bleakfuture I feel we are on a crash course for a dictatorship

@gavinisdie if we aren’t I’m not super sure how we end up avoiding it. 74 million people went out of their way to fully embrace it in 2020 and are showing zero signs of knowing better now.

That’s the scariest part. A whole hell of a lot of us are leaning into it. In the early days of the Nazi party I get it. Germany had been shoved around, disarmed and was grounded due to bad behavior. It’s natural to lash out.

Here things are honestly pretty damn good - and still they gnash their teeth.

@bleakfuture all started in 2016 and getting worse and worse when voted for congress call for SEPARATION & CIVIL WAR to divide a UNITED STATES...ALL COMMUNIST MOTIONS...SETUP BY RUSSIA........ WHY RUSSIA HAS TO BE STOPPED WITHIN AND WHERE IT IS...
@bleakfuture #ConservativeAurocrats are showing up locally and telling their cruel vision of morality. #ProEmpathyVoters can, should, and do more showing up locally and promote our mutual duties to protect and empower diverse communities of #NurturingFamilies caring for each other. We are and can be a #PresentHope. #ProEmpathyVoters must demand #ProEmpathyRepresentatives.
@bleakfuture
Thats right, and the only place votes really directly count is in small local elections, county supervisors, school boards, etc have a lot of power to shape things. Time to fill those school boards ourselves
@bleakfuture OMG! I read that book a looong time ago. Yes, too many people nowadays have no understanding of Hitler’s rise to power. And there are now many people following his playbook trying to gain power. For eg, DJ Trump, Carl Rove, et al.
@bleakfuture As with all autocrats, it almost always starts with censorship:

More Politicians Need To Address Book Bans: Book Censorship News, February 24, 2023

One US Governor spoke out against book bans. It should be a model for other politicians. That, plus this week's book censorship news.

BOOK RIOT
@Proartist stay tuned. This is the topic of the podcast my 13 year old and I are working on. I think our first book will be The Handmaids Tale.
@Proartist thanks for the link. I’ve saved it in my podcast bookmarks.
@bleakfuture that is my take as well. Best thing to do? Enjoy life.

@bleakfuture If you want something even more comprehensive than The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, the first volume of the Third Reich Trilogy by Sir Richard Evans is probably the best I’ve read on how the Nazi’s came to power and really looking at the underlying causes that allowed Nazism to take hold in Germany. The title sums it up perfectly:

The Coming of the Third Reich: How the Nazis Destroyed Democracy and Seized Power in Germany

@OldHound @bleakfuture

Good recommendation. Alan Bullock's biography of Hitler is also still considered a leading work. Shirer's "Rise and Fall" is popular, but is pretty much discredited by historians. Shirer himself was a journalist, not a historian. He jumps to unsupported conclusions and has been criticized by many for regarding homosexuality as a "perversion."

@stevensrmiller @OldHound yes I recall reading it and being sort of shocked at the editorialization. Gosh I’d forgotten about that.

@bleakfuture @OldHound

In our present situation, it is certainly important to read _something_ about how the Nazis and Hitler came to power. What shocked me about it most was that it was 100% legal. No coup, no putsch, no revolution. By the book.

Now, it would be fair to say early 20th century Germany wasn't nearly the pro-democracy society ours is today. Authoritarianism wasn't as abhorrent, maybe. But still, we all need to know how easily dictators can rise, particularly legally.

@stevensrmiller @OldHound I’m still shocked at the Trump presidency tbh.

The outrages came so rapidly on top of each other that within maybe 4 months my outrage processing faculties had more or less shut down and I just felt an overall malaise and anxiety.

I think that’s maybe another effective way to do it - the populace just gets fatigued at politics in general and focuses on The Bachelor and making sure their kids get showered and fed. Except the loonies. They’re still at work.

@bleakfuture

The most important thing we can do is WORK TO GET OUT THE VOTE. Collectively, US voters have never surpassed 60+% turnout, and that number has only been reached in a few presidential-year elections.

@bleakfuture I really dislike being "that" person...but, I'm going to be that person...

In the book, the radicalized religious nutters had actually taken over local elected offices first. Including the Presidency, and he dismissed Congress on the grounds of National Security, which allowed him to declare martial law.

Which actually makes what's happening now, even more distressing. 😖

@julescelt01 I appreciate you being that person. There’s no shame in being correct if you’re kind about - which you are.

I haven’t read it in 26 years so the show gets mixed in my head.

My daughter and I are doing a podcast about banned books in school libraries and this is the first book we’re reading.

@bleakfuture
are there any atheists in elected office anywhere?

I mean openly atheist, not all the fake christians

@dbc3 very very few if any.

Barney Frank was an outspoken atheist - can’t think of any others.

@bleakfuture so true, I read that book when I was 15 👍😍☮️
@bleakfuture Shirer’s book is instructional. I still have a copy on my shelf.
@bleakfuture I've been trying to voice my frustration about this for decades :/
@bleakfuture Absolutely right. This is an attempted coup without guns. Only deep ignorance of books like The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich can allow this. Read it in my teens.
