In Japan, some toilets have a built-in hand wash sink that recycles the water for the next flush, saving millions of litres of water every year #Innovation #Sustainability #MadeMeSmile
@Miriamm yes! I had this when I lived in Japan and wondered a nice then why we do not have this in Spain, drought is such a problem here!
@Miriamm It's not new at all. It's been around decades in Japan.
@mi6860 @Miriamm
Indeed. It was reasonably common when I was there in the 90s.
@Miriamm
At my hostel in Okinawa. I'm accustomed to washing my hands with warm water but apparently, that doesn't make a difference.
@Miriamm Not just Japan. We have them in Australia.
@Miriamm Nice, but good old peeing into sink saves water too

@Miriamm My grandmother-in-law had these on all her cisterns on the ground floor, and they're hard to use in winter because they use cold water.

But in the summer when water is scarce, it's really nice! Another great thing is that if you choose the hand soap carefully, it helps clean the bowl as well.

@Miriamm we saw this when we were in Tokyo a decade ago and when a local company had one we ordered it. It's in use for at least 5 year's now.
@macf00bar @Miriamm
Did you have to buy the whole tank/toilet, or does it fit on your existing one?
@JRBuckley @Miriamm it's just the Tank including the pipe to connect to the bowl. All we had to buy extra was a connecting hose to the water outlet.
@macf00bar @Miriamm I guess if I can install a toilet float, I can probably handle this. Any hints on where you got it?
@macf00bar @Miriamm how does it check for overflow, and how does it makes sure it flushes enough when you need to flush?
@Crates @Miriamm the tank has the same system as a normal tank with regards to how much to fill. For flushing there are two levers .. one for half and one for full tank flush.
@macf00bar @Miriamm yes, I was wondering where the water goes when the tank is full, and what happens if you want to go for a second flush (God forbid)
@macf00bar @Miriamm Saw a few of these in UAE and France as well.

Normally people don't clean their fresh water reservoirs very often, if at all. Do you find you have to clean it frequently?

I'd worry that over time the soap and grime would build up and interfere with the valve seal.

@apukwa @Miriamm once a year I remove the sink and scrub or spay it down with a garden hose. For the sink brush it over once a week or until you notice that the water doesn't run as fast as it should from the sink into the tank. As for the seals I can only say that I haven't done anything special yet and it's still tight (for approx. 5 to 6 years) but we stopped using soap bars and instead use thinned down liquid soap since it's only cold water and solid soap clogged the sink too frequently.
@Miriamm Whoever designed that should get an award.... or at least, the warm glow of satisfaction in a job very well done. #WantOne

@Miriamm WHY DONT WE ALL HAVE THIS?

Thanks for ever so gently rocking my world view @Miriamm

@Miriamm @smallsco I did look into this for when I start renovating the utility room which has a toilet that needs fixing/replacing.

You can get them on Amazon & a few other places in the UK - they look a bit plastic though but might still look into it again when the time comes

@peter @Miriamm I saw one of these when I visited a friend in Japan a few years ago - it seems like such an obvious thing to do, saving both water and space.

(Not to mention all the _other_ amazing features of Japanese toilets!)

@smallsco @Miriamm I can't remember where I first saw it but when I did I immediately thought what a brilliant idea it is.

For me it would save me some space in the small utility room as I want to repurpose part of it so I've got a permanent location for my printers which I could increase the space by removing the existing tiny sink with one of those

@Miriamm
great idea, must import them, watermanagement is 👍
@Miriamm Maybe it’s just me, washing my hands, I get water all over everything… wet toilet seat, anyone?
@Miriamm @tf this is such a simple but effective idea, in fact there’s no reason regular sinks couldn’t feed into the cistern too 🤔
@Miriamm not just Japan. This in York Place, Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@Miriamm
I've seen design suggestions for this in one of Bill Mollison's early permaculture books. Great to see the concept use as real products.
@Miriamm These are available in Australia too.

@Miriamm I've thought about how to install grey-water recycling for a long time and this is a neat small-scale solution.

Still - my well tends to bring up a lot of sediment and the whole-house filter doesn't get it all. Cleaning the inside of a toilet tank is a HUGE pain - and that's just sediment, that doesn't tend to coat everything the way soap scum does. I'd at least want to make sure the flush and fill valves are highly acid-resistant so you can use citric acid cleaner.
