John Carlos BaezIf you're the kind of person who follows me, you may know about the Kessler Syndrome.
That's when collisions between satellites and space junk create enough debris to cause *more* collisions, leading to a runaway chain reaction. This could render certain regions of near-Earth space unusable!
It's one of nature's ways of containing stupid civilizations, sort of like how inflammation contains infections. So don't be surprised:
A new study by Lewis and Kessler argues that we've hit the "runaway threshold" - the point where a chain reaction is expected - at nearly all altitudes between 520 and 1000 kilometers.
Below that, or above that, space could remain usable. So we could still get out and ruin other layers of space - or go to other planets and mess up those. Luckily, planned deployments of large satellite constellations like Starlink, Amazon's Project Kuiper, etc. will reduce the risk of such a breakout.
Yes, I'm joking - we can differ on whether the expansion of stupidity into the cosmos would be a good or bad thing compared to a mostly dead cosmos, and I don't really have an opinion on that. But the study is for real, and worth checking out:

ryunosevi 🇪🇺🐧@ramirenko Lo de "no merece la pena" me cabrea mucho... Que es cierto que si se le cortocircuita el bobinado del electro-imán y tiene que cambiarse, a lo mejor, pieza mas mano de obra vale más que una nueva... Aunque no deja de ser un desperdicio y solo tener en cuenta el dinero.
Pero muchos fallos de este tipo son literalmente restos de pan evitando un buen contacto y ni se miran, porque lo importante es vender... Y es una tostadora, pero pasa con muchas cosas.
Esto ocurre en una tostadora, en un horno o en un tractor. Esto va desde tornillos especiales a la necesidad de herramientas especificas y propietarias que solo dan a sus servicios oficiales hasta software propietario de gestión o diagnóstico...
Cosas de un capitalismo en el que te dan una tostadora con IA a la vez que te dicen que la debes tirar por una miga de pan en un contacto...

Depende del modelo, pero hay dos causas muy comunes y simples, una es simplemente suciedad en el núcleo del electro-imán o en la placa metálica fijada a la palanca que es atraída por éste y que además sirve de contacto. La otra es holgura en unas laminitas de cobre flexibles que sirven de interruptor al bajar la palanca.
Arreglar eso lleva un minuto, bien limpiar con alcohol, bien levantar un poquito las lamas para que vuelvan a hacer contacto correctamente al bajar la palanca.
